GPU could definitely be a possible factor here. It could also be your HDD, or other components. Things to try/watch, temperatures, run diagnostic tests (such as UBCD), try disk defragging and cleanup. Make sure all of your connections are secure. Even in the PCI-E slots.

yes to all three in old build. I just finhed rebuilding my computer had it lock up one time that I now of, but was went i open ie 9 (with 8 taps0 google chrome (with 6 taps opens) and downloading sp1 for win 7 and installing ms office h&s 2007 so that could have been a ram issue

if it is a vcard issue I was thinking getting the evga 550ti (Fermi) or the evga gtx 460 se (fermi), but it depend if I have a job or not this summer

Reset your cmos. Your not using any type of auto overclocking are you? eg: D.O.T. control etc etc. I've seen the exact same symptoms from that. I highly douth its soley your GPU causing that problem, unless you changed the PCI frequency. Roll back any OC you've done for a while to test.

Even though your GPU isn't overclocked, other oc's will affect it. Try undoing all of your OC's and see how everything performs. It that solves the issue, then just readjust your OC.
