Recommendations for All-Purpose Build

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm building a computer for my girlfriend's family. Her mom insists on getting "the best parts" despite not doing anything demanding on her PC, so I have come here for some help. I have chosen everything except the motherboard and CPU so far. Budget is less than a grand before tax+shipping.

I've chosen such a high resolution monitor, because she wants the same monitor I have due to its size. The power supply is mostly a place holder, depending on what parts I'll be getting. I chose 8GB of RAM, because the Dell at the store has 8GB and she wants it to be better than that.

I have posted this in both the Intel and AMD boards, because I'm not exactly sure what would be best (although she says she wants the "i" like the Dell has, lol). She just doesn't want the computer to be slow and to last a long time. It's tough for me to decide what parts to choose, because she wants "the best," but she obviously doesn't need it. I mean I could easily piece together an amazing 2600k set-up, but I'd feel terrible having her spend so much on something she will never utilize.

I would appreciate any help you guys could give me.

Well if she doesn't game than you can def. Put something cheap together.

CPU- 2500k - $200

- Asus p67 (anyone is fine since she won't oc or anything like that) - 130

Case- haf 912 or cheaper. Let her pick it lol. - $50

- Antec 550 or 650- $60
Video card (she probably doesn't care)- get a cheap 5770- $100

Ram- g.skill 8 gb ram. $90 on sale at newegg

Hdd- f3 spinpoint- $65

Blu ray drive- $80 ( she might like this. I have my desktop connected to my tv thru an hdmi so I love the blu ray player.

Roughly $775. With room to improve later on if she ever wanted to.

Add a Kingston 64 gb SSD for $75 of she wants. Definitely worth it and with what she doing that's probably the only thing she'll notice day to day.

Total $850 at most

Unknowingly to them, what they mean by "the best" is completely different from what we mean by "the best."

Do them a favor and convince them to go with an Athlon II X3/X4, 4GB RAM, and a HD 5450 or something. I doubt Microsoft Office 2012 or Internet Explorer 10 will be needing more than that. They'll appreciate that $300 they saved when it comes in handy for something they do need.

id get better than the athlon x3/x4 and more than 8 gb ram. Even though you might not use it yet you'd be surprised when they become useful. Especially for not that much more $$. I didn't need my desktop to have that crazy of a processor but than i had about 2 tb worth of videos to encode... the i5 kept me from going crazy doing it

if you have a microcenter near you the 2500k is pretty cheap. 8 gb ram is what like $30-40 more? I doubt your gf's family cares about that. But yeah get the 5450 b.c she'll prob never need more than that and if she does you can upgrade it for cheap.

yeah if you have a microcenter near you you will be in luck. the i5-2500k for example sells for 179.99 and the i7-950 for 199.99. i5 is 224.99 on newegg and i7 is 269.99 on newegg. unfortunately, they are out of stock on the i5 :/

Sandy Bridge and more than 8GB of RAM? You can't be serious. I don't think you read the thread clearly.

From how the OP described their conversation about this build, they clearly don't sound like they'll be needing more than an X4 and 4GB of memory any time soon.

There's no sense in not saving your girlfriend's family several hundreds of dollars. Unless you hate them.

I don't think S.hasan546 knows what he's talking about tbh...

To OP:
- Stick with 4gb ram. It's more than enough for general purposes.
- Go with 500W PSU. 650W is overkill.
- Go with an AMD build (pref Atholn II x4 640 propus)
- Most families use their PC as a media centre btw
- Do them a favor and make your system USB 3.0 friendly since it's gonna be standard for media (photos/videos/etc) pretty soon

So all that being said, here's my suggestion for an intel build if you must go with intel:

Case: HEC Blitz Black / Haf 912 $40~$50
CPU: i5-2500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-073-_-Product) $210
Mobo: MSI H67MA-E35 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130569) $100
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw 4gb 1600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277) $50
HDD: WD Blue Caviar 500GB x2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-769-_-Product) $100 <- Raid0 it\\
ODD: Any $20 one is good unless you wanna add blu-ray for them
GPU: Asus GTX 550 TI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-435-_-Product) $150
Cooler: CM Hyper 212+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-065-_-Product) $35
PSU: Seasonic Modular 520W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-093-_-Product) $80

Total: $800

Now you have $200 room for OS and blu-ray if you want to go that way.
You can also upgrade the ram to 8gb, but it's an overkill imo.
If you go with a similar AMD build, then you can save around $100~150 more.
Then you can invest in a nice set of speakers (2.1 channel) and a monitor.

General Purpose machines end up as Media Centers - some music, family vids, pics.
Make sure they get a decent display (a 24" HP eIPS, for ex) and decent speakers.
