URGENT! Help ASUS motherboard spark and smoke

Thread Starter
I recently installed the ASUS motherboard on a new CPU case that I got along with the PSU. I didn't realize it at the time but the motherboard was shorting to the case because once I pressed power button, the unit turned on for less than a second and shut off promptly. So I took it out and placed the PSU and mobo on desk and tested it again. It worked fine. So I put the unit back in the case and turned it on. It started up again but this time from the middle-right side of the case, I could hear a crackling noise and saw smoke come out. I quickly turned off the power and pulled the cable out.

So then I contacted ASUS RMA and then they told me the procedure and gave me a number.

Three hours later, I get a little curious. I take out the ASUS mobo and put it on the desk. I bust out a spare PSU and connect all the parts. The mobo starts fine. I connect my old 7600 GT to the mobo along with a 40 gb harddrive with Windows XP on it from my old pc. I keep the same CPU and RAM. Everything loads fine.

My question is, if I send this to ASUS RMA, would they even bother correcting the issue? I don't know how they test their motherboards. I'm mainly concerned after seeing this thread.

EDIT: I should add that, there are no burn marks or anything but there is a strong burning smell coming from the right side. Also, what sort of tests should I do to make sure everything is working?

you couldve just fried a small part or a connector or something.

Id still RMA it though. Theyll probably send you back a new one.

Isnt it burned or something where the smoke came from? that should be pretty obvious

I think I may have gotten lost somewhere. Smoke = fire, i.e., you ought to be able to visibly see what sizzled. Was it the PSU, or was it the motherboard?

It was the motherboard. The reason why I swapped PSU and HDD is so that I don't accidentally damage my storage and power supply. I think what sizzled was a microchip that sits right beside the IDE connector. There's a small bump on top of the chip. I'm not sure what this chip does. Should I just add like a small sticky note to show that this part might be damaged?

Pics attached below!

Smoke dosen't always equal fire, i once plugged in a Cd drive, some smoke can out and A very weird smelt, but no fire. I opened it up it didn't even look burnt but it never turned on again

Don't nail me down but I think the 3310GH mosfet might be for powering the fan headers on the board.

Edit; I'd RMA the board

Doesn't that PSU have OCP? If it does then it should've saved the board or any components from damage.

^^^ it looks like that chip is the CHA FAN 2 's voltage regulator
Did you plug any fan there? Bad fan , maybe?

I would never use a PSU that came with a case. I don't like seeing them let alone hearing about them on here. Sorry man :/ hope you get it worked out.

LOL ,Nikos all over the mobo.
Where there is Nikos there are failures. It s like a turnesol/marker of the quality of the motherboard.
It s not a Nikos that failed ,but who knows if they are not involved somehow smile.gif
