It's always good to move up to the current generation, you'll feel god about your purchase too. If the 6950 is too expensive than go with the 6870 or if you want a 6xxx equivalent of the 4870 get the 6790.

The Sapphire is an extremely awesome card for the price. If you can find it in the UK, that is.
+2

You should be able to find that 5850 for about £100, its definitely worth it over the 4 series cards, id say its nearly twice as quick as a 4870

If it's more expensive, then why ? He doesn't need/want DX11 and further powersaving features seems to have no impact either.

well put the 4870 is perfect for my needs it will run any game i need it 2 run DX11 support is useless to me as no game i have supports it and and i never use power saving features my system boots and shuts down in less than 90 seconds so if im not going to use it i turn it off as the card im going to get is ether 4850 or 4870 just have to get a better psu for the 4870

The 4870 is a faster card. Even though both cards have 1GB of memory the 3870x2's memory gets cut in half when you crossfire because both GPUs have to share the memory. Also the 3870x2 uses GDDR4 instead of the much faster GDDR5 on the 4870.
