Right now I'm saying keep your desire, you won't see much if any difference upgrading.
With that type of Developer's support, it'll be a waste not to root that thing!

Root, then decide.

It should keep you satisfied until a better phone comes out.

Tell me one thing. Can your Desire handle flash? My Galaxy S barely did and my quadrant score of 1.2k stock to 2.2k with 1.4Ghz and custom ROM made no difference were it mattered like flash. Atrix now with stupid stock Rom and full of crap runs flash like butter.

Never had any trouble with flash(other than some sites absolutely hating touch input), must've just been your phone. Then again I haven't been stock forever so it might not be the case if you aren't rooted.

Nope, wasn't just his phone, I had a Desire that was rooted and OC'ed to 1.2Ghz, and flash was appaling in SOME instances, most times it was fine though. Same with my girlfriends Desire.

What rom? I've had much more success with gingerbread (sense or non-sense) over froyo. From what I've seen flash is terrible in general on phones, as far as actually using it goes at least. Its buttery smooth for me but its almost impossible to touch the right buttons so sorta makes it useless

Ah, I was on RCMixHD I believe, which was froyo at the time, I smashed my desire by accident before I got a chance to try gingerbread : P
And yeah I know what you mean by trying to press the right button was nigh impossible hahaha
