Does overclocking take more power

Thread Starter
Im planning on overclocking my 5770, I own an amd phenom ii x4 840 @ 3.2 ghz so I don't think I will get any bottleneck :/

If I where to overclock to 960/ 1445 how much of an fps increase do you think I would get in general.

And does overclocking take more power, gpu wise. I ordered an 850w psu but for now im on a corsair 400w which is a good brand so would it be safe to oc to them clocks on this psu?

Thanks in advanced for the mass amount of help I have gotten from this website in the past biggrin.gif

OC takes more power, how much depends on your setup. Figure 10-15% to be safe. Btw 850w is overkill for your setup.

Yes, when you over clock your CPU is using more power, IE the increased voltage to keep the chip stable. The same can be said for GPU's. When in you increase your voltage you are increasing the power drain on the PSU. It may not be by much, but it is at least a couple of watts, depending on the amount of voltage increase you use.

Of course it does, especially if you are upping voltage in addition to clock speeds.

Power = Voltage x Current -> Increase either and power consumed will increase.

Yes, overclocking your GPU will require more power though it depends how much you are doing. 850W is massive overkill.

550W should be plenty.

I'd cancel that order for the 850 watt PSU, that is hella overkill unless you play on SLIing/CrossFireing a couple of power hungry GPUs. Corsair makes high end PSUs and the 400 watt unit that you have should be just fine.

OC does take more Power but its minimal until you up the Voltages then it gets into the 10% and more. but the 5770 with 960 core should only need 500 Watt instead of 450 so an 850 is way overkill for your rig.

Yes it will use more power when you increase the voltage to make it stable.
