Offset or Fixed Manual Voltage?

What's better for Overclocking? Assuming you could tweak them both to the exact amount of voltages you need...

Would it be better for your computer to go idle with lower voltages and raise vcore during load, or idle with high voltages and drop down during load using LLC? What would provide the least amount of stress on your CPU?

Personally, I don't fold, I occasionally play demanding games like Crysis 2, so my computer would be idle far more than anywhere near 100% load. I assume using offset would be better, but is having the voltage constantly scale bad for the CPU?

For the voltage to drop under load, is undesirable. This is called vdroop and LLC is to raise the voltage under load, however this can cause dangerous voltage spikes. It's best just to disable all throttling, including auto-voltage raising and lowering such as cool n quiet and LLC.

Stress is all about load on the cpu, not voltage. any amount of voltage will decrease the lifespan of the cpu, even stock volts. No cpu will last forever. As you increase voltage, the lifespan decreases almost exponentially, and not linear. You should stay within a 200mv increase for 24.7, provided your temps are under control.

Offset is better, but you need to disable LLC for it to dynamically adjust the voltages. (LLC will force the Voltage you set constantly, under load or when idle).

Also, enable C1E to reduce the clock when it's idle (this will also compensate for Vdroop). This will lower temps on idle too.

So, Offset with LLC off and C1E would be better, but will require you to tweak it further than just set the fixed voltage and forget about it.

I use offset voltage, I prefer seeing lower volts on idle (~1.1-1.2) and having it rise responding to load (~1.35). I heard is is possible to get similar overclocks with lower voltage and temperatures using offset.

I've read about other people's problems using offset voltage control as well as experienced problems myself. I could run Prime95 for days being stable, but crash when idle or under partial load when using offset voltage. I switched to manual voltage and never looked back. You're saving less than 5W at idle, perhaps even a lot less using offset voltage.

I use offset, I like my CPU's voltage reducing on idle. There are as many issues with Offset as Fixed, you just need to find the proper voltage.

It most likely comes down to personal preference... but once you have acheived stable settings with either method does it really matter? I'm running SB with offset and a daily 4.7GHz "crunching" overclock but I sometimes switch to fixed for benching/testing higher mutli(s).
