Shared Sys Memory

Thread Starter
My Laptop Graphics card shares with system memory. It has 256 dedicated VRAM while my comp has 4GB. I just reinstalled Win 7 x64 bit from Win 7 x32 since i picked up an SSD.

With my old install if you looked in the resource monitor under the memory tab it would show 1GB as "Hardare Reserved," but now its only showing 2MB as Hardware reserved.

I have all the drivers that it needs installed but am trying to make sure my video card can still acess sys memory. Is there any way for me to check and see how much system memory my card is accessing, like a monitoring program. Thanks.

Follow these steps to check and ascertain that your graphics card can access system memory:

Note the 4 numbers assigned (see red box in the pic below).

Here is my graphics adapter readout

Total Available Graphics Memory 2047MB
Dedicated Video Memory 256MB
System Video Memory 0MB
Shared System Memory 1791MB

So I guess that it can use almost half of my system memory if it needs to. Is there anyway to see how much system memory it is using at any given time? Is that what System Video Memory is?

You can use freeware MSI Afterburner to check real-time graphic card memory usage. See pic below. Note the graph with label GPU memory usage. Note it has a maximum of 2048MB.

System Video Memory is 0MB because the system has no onboard graphics chipset (eg Intel H57). If it has one, then it will show a non-zero number.

Thanks for the help, but unfortunately Afterburner memory usage never goes above 254MB even though it shows the max up to 2048, so I think its only reading the dedicated memory. I didn't think to use afterburner since it shows incorrect clocks for my 8700M GT. Ill try messing around with the different drivers. I know the video bios is included in the system bios and I cant adjust anything there. I am using the latest nVidia drivers 270.61 instead of the ones on Toshiba's website so I'll give those a go.
