[CVG]Sony sued over PSN data breach - Page 6

This is really not that surprising and I am sure more will follow. Especially if CC information was stolen.

Not really saying I agree with either side but if Sony did not protect their network properly then they deserve what comes to them. Their job is to keep our data secure for the service they provide. Failure to do that should result in consequences. Whether that be with lawsuits or not is another story. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Idk if he was affected, other than PSN downtime, by the breach. If he was (IE CC# stolen and fraud committed) he deserves to sue, else he doesn't. I'll be jumping on the wagon as I stupidly allowed my card to be 'remembered' by PSN but only IFF it gets charged. The only time I tie a card to a non-bank related account and that service gets breached....

If this guy wins this lawsuit, Sony is in for a real treat, as many others will follow.

Sony painted a target on their backs for the way they went after GeoHot, where they could've handled the matter kinda like how Microsoft handled the Kinect hackers.

And now, the only ones that will be affected are the PSN users who's data may have been stolen.

Wait... did you just seriously compare Kinect hackers to Geohot's stuff?

Why does he need to prove anything? The hackers already have the data on the 77 million users. CC, address, birthday etc. Not to mention Sony tried to hide this information and they stored the credit card information in plain text format instead of hashing it. Talk about a total lack of concern for the customers. Sony deserves all the lawsuits.

There isn't any proof CC information was stolen. So far, there isn't any sign that any CC data was taken at all. They are just warning you of the possibility, just in case. So far, the only data that has been taken is the very same data you can get from any standard Facebook profile, besides the passwords. That is the only thing I am upset about, is the passwords. Password leaks happen quite often, people just like to pick on the "big greedy corporation". I don't remember seeing so much crying after all of Gizmodo passwords were leaked.
Not to mention, they didn't "hide" any information from anyone. They weren't even sure anything was stolen up until around Monday. They approached this just as they should have, disabling PSN and figuring out what has happened before scaring everyone.

Ignorant people will be ignorant.

I am surprised they didn't encrypt the data, they should be called out on that. Though, they shouldn't be -singled- out. So many others do it, such as Gizmodo, but people only care when they can sue to get money out of it.

They knew about the security leak for the past 5 days and chose not to let people know until yesterday. Furthermore, they did leave themselves open to this, because who in their right mind would store sensitive personal and financial information in PLAIN TEXT, without any sort of encryption, salting, or hashing. In addition, it's required by LAW to have in place such measures to protect users' information.

In short, Sony doesn't have a foot to stand on. And their liability here can very easily be in the billions.
http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/...g_8436469.html
They didn't necessarily know that information leaked... they knew there was a breach, sure. Knowing what kind of information the breach led to being leaked requires an investigation... which, you know, takes time.

I don't think they kept quiet for too long after finding out. It would make no sense to keep it under wraps for only a few days -- if they really wanted to do something like that, they wouldn't ever tell us.

It's far more likely they were just waiting for more information before making an announcement.

Says who? Just because the information was compromised doesn't mean it wasn't encrypted. There are lots of documented cases of weaknesses in encryption implementations and algorithms leading to seemingly secure encryption being cracked.

If you think that someone just got up one day and decided "Okay, let's hack PSN!", then you're very wrong. It's probably something that was being planned for a very long time, and with funding to back it, too.

its smell the end of playstation!
i dont see how sony will be able to get out of this situation. its going worst day by day
if the psn is down right now its because they didnt have the control over it yet and they dont know what to do. The only solution that i see for them is to rebuilt them servers from A to Z and even if they do that who knows if the hacker couldnt get in again? so the $investement$ is to big and dangerous to do. So at this point it smeel the death of playstation and it smell hard

lil advise for ps3 owners:
cancel already your credit card if your informations are.. heh.. was in there
change you password where you took the same of psn "everybody use the same password" i know what im talking about
and be very careful of what you receive by mail email phone...fax whatever
and do those things fast!!! 77 millions of acount information is in the market right now and it began the very first day the system went down. What you think the hackers were loooking at your stats in Black ops before steeling your identity be realiste they were selling it 1 hour after. So now iam going to sleep happy because i always be a pc gamer
and i will be able to play tommorow as usual.... ok bad joke sry.... but true

error32: PSN is offline because they haven't yet figured out how it was hacked or maybe they just haven't fixed it yet. Maybe they have but they just want to be extra sure there isn't anything else so they're conducting a thorough checkup of EVERYTHING.

Sony doesn't have to do anything you've said. This is not the end of PS, or even PSN.

As for advice for PS3 owners:
Sony has already given advice regarding preventing identity theft (in e-mails to PSN members). They also gave numbers you can call to place a fraud alert on your accounts, and they'll pay the expenses if you call those numbers.

You shouldn't give advice on this.
