Monitor suddenly goes blank yet it's not a BSOD

Thread Starter
Several times now while surfing online my monitor will suddenly go blank as if it's getting no signal. I have to turn off my PC and turn it back on to get it working again. It's definitely not a problem with the monitor because this has happened using two different monitors. My CPU/Video card temps are fine and it even happens running my video card at stock. It's as if my GTX 470 randomly decides to stop sending the signal to the monitor. When I check Windows logs there's no errors or anything so it's definitely not a BSOD or the drivers crashing.

Anyone have any suggestions or is this a sign of a dying card? Luckily it's still under warranty but I don't have a spare video card so I'll have to buy a cheap one if I have to send this one in for repair. frown.gif

Try a fresh install of the drivers. if that fails, try it in a different pci-e slot and then another card if possible.

Maybe its a problem with the cable? I would at least try to replace the cable and see if it stops before you send your video card in.

That sounds like a dying card. Update drivers. does your computer freeze or anything with a sound loop?

Good idea, I'll try another PCI-E slot. I've already tried a fresh install of the drivers unfortunately.

No go, I tried a spare cable already and same problem.

No sound loop but I do get an occasional freeze when my PC first boots up. The odd thing is I NEVER have any issues while in a game. It always happens while the card is pretty much idle. (just surfing online)

The HDD's are fine according to chkdsk and obviously I won't defrag the SSD. I switched the GTX 470 to another slot so hopefully that will fix it. The problem is it happens randomly and I can go a week or more without it not happening sometimes so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I did do 'sfc /scannow' and all my system files are fine. The fact my logs are showing no issues seems to indicate it's probably the card or PCI-E slot though. frown.gif

If the card is OC'd, have you tried downclocking it?
Either way, people have already mentioned possibility of a faulty card.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope its not your card failing!!

Ugh... now suddenly my BIOS reset itself and complained it couldn't boot due to improper OC settings. That's odd considering I've used these settings for a long time and I originally did 24hr of Prime95 to be sure it was stable. Afterwards Windows 7 asked me to re-activate windows too. thinking.gif

However, it dawned on me that I flashed my bios awhile back to a new version so perhaps the new BIOS is the culprit. I'm going to flash back to the old BIOS and reset CMOS to see if that fixes it. Perhaps maybe even do another 24hr prime95 run to be sure too.
