Cooling issues with Corsair 800D, GPU maxing out.

Posted this in my essentials topic but I figured a separate topic dedicated to this issue might be best.

Currently I have the two top fans pulling air out, rear fan pushing air in through the H50, Bottom fan pushing air up and of course HD fans doing their thing but I don't think that has any affect on my GPU's.

I was thinking on switching my top fans to intakes (They're both next to each other towards the back two top fan slots) and then putting the rear fan that came with the case on the side of my gpu's either locked onto the gpu's or with doublesided tape on the window of the case.

While running vantage my first card hit 105c and stopped working and my second card went into the 90's. Usually the second card would stay in the 70's and the second in the low 90's at full load with my old antec 900.

Think there are any tweaks to my setup that would help with airflow, case seems pretty bad at it as is.

Random thoughts (I've got the same case, cooler and a 480):

Are the cards directly next to each other or is there a slot between them? That might give them a little more room to breathe.

Yes, the 800D isn't the best case for airflow. I would advise against making the top fans as intake. If anything, make the top three exhaust. SLI'd 480s, its going to get hot and you need to pull as much hot air out as possible.

Stock coolers on the 480s? Might be time to look at an aftermarket cooler (I have the AXP, card idles at 33C, maxes out at 60C) or WC.

Any free front bays? If so, you could look into a front bay mod to bring in more cool air into the case. I have a Lian Li front mod with a 120mm fan as intake.

Aftermarket cooler? Like not water cooling but aftermarket air cooling? o_O

Accelero Xtreme Plus

I have this one, keeps my temps low. Only downside is it turns a 480 into a three slotter. If you have room (2 480s with these, 6 slots), it would cool your 480s down a lot if you didn't want to go WC.

My biggest issue is my pcie x1 slot is in the way so if I switch my cards I can't use my sound card. Currently have my 9600gt in the 16x slot and I don't think my board will let me space them properly if those coolers take up three slots. =/

Corsair 800D is just not a good air cooling case unless you have only 1 card.
When 2 graphics cards have not space between them, this really calls for strong air input from the side panel and from the cards' front (the 2 green arrows in pic) but 800D just does not have. Airflow from lower fan will just go upward due to the 3 extract fans on top of case. The airflow will hardly make a 90-degree turn to get into the tiny gap between cards (see blue arrows) because the intake fan of the cards is just relatively too weak to make that change of the upward air flow path.

You may try this to see how much help it gives: install a 120mm fan (its fixation needs some DIY) just in front of the cards. See the yellow rectangle. Its purpose is to push air into the gaps between cards.

I did a spot fan. I put a 140mm fan and leaned it against the HD bay encloser I just leaned it there and it really helped out on air. I also added a mess filter to a front may door a zip tied a 120mm fan to the back of my optical drive this gave me intake for the ram and CPU while the bottom intake was going directly to the GPU's it worked really well. But now I have water... So that is all over now. Don't think I have pictures of when I had it mounted like that but you couldn't see it really even through the window the fans where off to the right towards the bays it was pretty hidden. That was the best I could do on air with that case.

That may work...I know I had head issues with my antec before I added that fan on the side vent and that side fan helped lower my temps about 15 or so degrees. If this works, you are a the man. ^_^

Rep all around.

YES! That did the trick. Cards are now at about 85-88 on GPU 1 and 69-75 on GPU 2. Reseated the cpu and now all my temps are manageable. Had to lean the fan on the HD cover but it works. I wish you would post again so I can rep you some more. ^_^

On a side note I was thinking about removing some of the bay covers for the pci slots....think that would help with airflow.
