Power Management question

Hey

In Nvidia control panel, theres an option called Power Management Mode, and 2 options, Performance and Adaptive.

What do people tend to choose ? also what are the differences between the two, e.g, does the card run hotter due to more power ?

Performance forces 3D clocks on the card regardless of the load/task you're doing.

Adaptive lets drivers choose clocks based on profiles and load/task you're doing.

Since it's a gaming rig you're running, the performance settings is what you want.

EDIT: I've read somewhere that Aero can conflict with this setting, so you might want to disable the transparency effect or Aero altogether to possibly save some FPS in older games, or keep it on if user interface effects are important to you, whatever you prefer.

The card uses more power in Performance mode since the higher clock is being forced constantly.

So what would people with gaming machines usually prefer, Adaptive or Performance ?

Performance of course. You want to keep it at high clocks for best performance, power supply wouldn't be an issue for you.

Usually graphics cards change the clocks when doing 3D/2D work anyway.

My computer uses 30+ less watts when in the lowest power state vs. the highest power state while idling. At 68 watts idle, that's a big difference. Keep that in mind.

Never had a problem with adaptive, in XP or 7, with any game, and any driver version either.

Yes. Newer games using DX10/11 SHOULDN'T have this problem if you're using Adaptive (still possible though), DirectX9 games and older could run into problems though, I still recommend Performance mode, unless you're running DX10/11 games only, in which case you might as well leave it in Adaptive state. It's up to you.
