Llano Graphics Clarification

Thread Starter
Just doing some research on the upcoming tech when I learn that Llano's on-board 6620 can assist the "onboard discrete GPU".

Now, did Wikipedia make a 'Whoops'? -Last I knew, discrete graphics were whatever the CPU was pumping out in the first place? Or are they not considering Bulldozer has a whole product here, and talking about synergy between the CPU + GPU?

Or is Bulldozer able to syngerize with a DEDICATED card? Because that'd be pretty awesome.

AMD has had IGP+discrete = crossfire for many years now. It was considered a "fail product" however as the IGPs were very low end. (still better than other IGPs, but not comparable to a discrete GPU). And, they were limited to hybrid crossfire with things like the 3400 series IIRC.

Will that change with the new arch? I am not sure. I have been reading about power saving features... like the discrete card gets completely powered down when not needed but adds its horsepower when you run a game for instance. All through the IGP port...

I definitely am interested in the new APUs coming out, and looking forward to testing Intels Z68 as well. (H67 just does not make any sense since only 2500K/2600K have a decent IGP in them). Neither will make much sense forthe enthusiast market, except in the sense that very many people have more than one PC in the house, and only one is a considered a "gamer" (like me.. two PCs for gaming 4 for other uses)

The synergy with AMD you mention is what I expect, they have been working towards it for the last 5 years now. Hopefully soon they will perfect it. I imagine it will still a problem like, needing nearly identical architecures.. so 6500/600 only in that case.

The cards used are 3 archs based on the recent guru3d review

6500/6600 uses one. 6900 uses another. All other 6000 series cards use the original arch. I am a little fuzzy on the details myself.. (turks, VLIW4 and Northern Islands... thats about all I can tell you). Looks like BD will use the northern islands arch...

Llano is a tweaked K10 (Athlon II) + HD 5500~5600 level graphics (Redwood, I think?).

Trinity is the one which will feature Bulldozer CPU.

The technology is called Hybrid CrossfireX and AFAIK does nothing to boost performance. The only benefit was power savings since it would essentially "turn off" the discrete card when "idle" and run things off the IGP.

Since they're marketing GPU's under the AMD name now I think they changed the name to AMD Switchable Graphics or something like that instead of Hybrid Crossfire.

Actually, Nvidia did that (Hybrid Power). AMD's Hybrid Crossfire increases performance when paired with a low level GPU, but is pretty much useless for 6 series or greater (e.g. HD 4670). In fact, it would even lower performance than when using just the discrete GPU.

I stand corrected. I don't think I've ever taken advantage of that specific technology only heard about it in passing. Lets be honest, pairing an IGP with a 5770 probably wouldn't make that much of a difference anyways.

And that's why it was a fail. If you need GPU muscle, you don't buy an HD 4550 to Crossfire with a 785G integratec graphics. You just buy an HD 4670 or 4770 for $10-40 more.

Nvidia, on the other hand, had the right idea. If you enable Hybrid Power, you could pair a GeForce 9300 with, say, a GTX 260. During gaming, you'll be using the GTX 260. During normal tasks such as web surfing, video playback, etc, you'll be using integrated and the discrete GPU will be using barely any electricity. LegitReviews reviewed Hybrid Power with a 9800 GTX. On idle, the 9800 GTX system (IGP disabled) used 133W while the system with Hybrid Power enabled only used 78W. With just integrated graphics, the system was using 74W idle.
