Cheap Motherboard Upgrade - Searching

Thread Starter
Hi team,

My current rig:

CPU- Inter Core 2 Duo e6300 (socket 775)
Mobo- ASUS P5NSLI - Nvidia nForce Chipset
8GB DDR2 ram
550W Power Supply
GPU- Radeon HD 4890

I'm looking for cheap options to upgrade my motherboard (followed by a likely cpu upgrade, if not simultaneous). I'm currently running a lots of cpu-intensive programs (RTS games, etc) and I have no problems with graphics quality, only quantity i.e. fps drops with increases in unit numbers.

Budget around $200 max, looking for significantly cheaper options on the mobo. A cheap socket 775 option would be great because then i could transfer my cpu and overclock it (my current BIOS does not allow overclocking past about 1.5%)

Thanks all!

-eVGA nForce 680i

-Asus P5N32-E SLI

- GIGABYTE-GA-EP45-UD3P

There's few new 775 board's so your options are limited, these boards listed above are great but you'll have to get them used.

That gigabyte is a decent buy for 120$

Thanks heaps, I'm looking at those right now. I've also been advised that simply upgrading my mobo isn't going to give be very good return on my dollar and I've been advised to check out newer cpu/mobo combos. Any ideas on where to start?

I'd suggest you look into an AM2+ board that supports DDR2, and the x6 processors. Maybe jump into one of those and a 955BE C3 quad core.

Best bang would the buck would be a athlon ii x4 and a evo.

Athlon II X4 has only 2mb cache and Phenom has 8mb. Get Phenom II X2 BE 555/560 and unlock to X4. I bought 2 560 and both unlocked easily. You could just pick up combo discounts if live near by microcenter. I got Phenom II X2 BE 560 + MSI 880G-E45 for $130.
