Like you said pretty much - they were targeted. Once you're in the line of fire of hackers-en-mass, it's only a matter of time before something really goes overboard.
You mean like how their reputation was "obliterated" because of SONY installing rootkits on people's computers? As much as SONY should feel the pinch for such lax security I'm sure the PS4 will sell just fine; just like the XBox "720" will despite the red ring of death fiasco. Not because they've done anything to re-earn the consumer's trust, but because boycotting is such a pain in the ass for the consumer.

True, in several years everyone will loo back and be like "did that actually happen?"

Still - this isn't a very trustful situation.
Sure, the 360 had it's RRoD problem enmass but people have already forgotten about it. Utterly sad, but true. People were/are buying additional 360s like its nothing, but still claiming things like how the PS3 or PC gaming cost more money.
This is member information, with some CC fraud possibility on the side.

someone was talking about steamworks being added when this comes back up:

what if that's the reason it's down. it's a viral thing and they say the portal computer hacked in and installed steam. poorly played yes, but it just shows you that when you give people a story they will turn it into 30 different things.

i know that was joked about, but i hope it's true so all these hackboyz can have it rubbed in their faces.

Its like if i bought a car...

EDIT: Most repeated sentence ever aside, no, this isnt for a greater cause or sweet justice or anything moronic like that.

1) Modify hardware sure, but dont hack the software which is merely licensed to you, not owned by you.

2) I couldn't care about the pulling of OtherOS, if the modding community liked it so much, why modify it so it can be used for piracy; at a time when the console was making a loss on hardware and a profit only on licensing, only the most stupidest of owners wouldn't have done what sony did. Not doing it has economic consequences; companies lose money, cut production, people lose jobs. What kind of heartless, self-centered community values the ability to run homebrew games, opening up the means for piracy, over the jobs of many, the families of many, I do not know. Frankly, these people can barely see past their own wants and needs and then accuse the consumer of blind selfishness for the sake of an extremely trivial liberty. Yes, being able to modify your console's software that you don't own is a trivial liberty; real liberties are things like freedom of speech, right to work, right to your beliefs, privacy rights. That's worth fighting for.

3) While the going after geohot thing was a bit far, perhaps you supporters of him should enlighten yourselves; "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

4) Identity theft is a serious crime. No-one deserves to have their idtentity stolen.
