odd BIOS error when attempting to get to 4ghz/unlock my CPU

Thread Starter
the other night i was messing around with my BIOS attempting to unlock my CPU, i did get it unlocked but was chuckling to myself because of the truckload of volts i had to put through it. now after i got it to unlock first off my BIOS said it was now a Phenom II x4 B40, but when i reached windows, Core Temp was still reading an Athlon II x3 440. after seeing this i just figured i would re start it and see if it would fix itself, well when i restarted it i got this:

now today when i decided that unlocking was not going to happen i decided to go straight for 4Ghz, set everything in my BIOS and hit F10 praying that it would work, it did boot but after it showed the MSI splash screen it flashed back to that same error....

my settings where kinda odd though, lol

i had my multiplier set to x15 and the fsb set to whatever it needed to be to hit 4.005ghz

ram and ht link and ??north bridge?? speeds were all lower than speeds that i have run them stable at before

now the voltages where the crazy part

CPU - 1.558
CPU-NB - 1.5....
RAM 1.71

now is it because i had the voltages too high that this error occurred or is it something totally different?

wow that was longer than i expected...... sorry for making you read all that...

I would suggest that you read these 2 threads before trying to overclock with your motherboard.

To sum it up your board has a very weak power phase and is almost certain to fry itself with almost any over clocking at all. You put way too much voltage through it and most likely damaged your board. If you would like to overclock your processor you should buy a better motherboard.

It depends on what version of windows you bought. If it is OEM and you want to be completely legal then yes you would have to. Not saying that it won't activate on a new board or anything..... it will, but its not legal according to the software license. It is up to you to make the choice.

If you have a retail version of Windows 7 you are free to do what you want with it as long as it is only activated on one machine at a time.

Just make sure that you get a board that has 8 power phases if you plan to overclock. The posts I mentioned in an earlier post on this thread have spreadsheets showing what boards are good for overclocking and which ones are not. When your ready to buy make a thread asking what board to get if you are still confused!

yea from looking at that spread sheet i think i am gonna go with this board, dual PCI-e x16 @ x16 and it was one of the highest rated boards on that sheet

the reason i am staying with MSI is because i personally have had no issues with them and because of this list

To each their own I guess. You will find a lot of hatred towards MSI on the forums.... They are not a brand we would ever recommend. Asus, or gigabyte is the way to go.
