Question about 12 gigs of RAM

Thread Starter
I have a 2x2GB set right now, and I am buying a 2x4GB sometime soon. Could I use all 4 RAM slots and make my PC have 12GB?

Sorry if this is really basic, I am horrible with PC's.

You could, but it's not advisable. You'd likely never utilise more than 8Gb unless you're a uber video-editing, photoshopping wiz. Completely filling your ram banks can actually negatively impact your performance.

The RAM I have is kind of crappy. It is from my friend's old HP desktop. It looks like a regular piece of RAM from 4 years ago, just a green stick, nothing fancy like those colored RAM sticks.

Then if you buy that 8 gig kit then take out the older ram.. it will probably bottleneck.

Yea but the fancy heatsink doesn't change much...it looks good though If you have money to spend they yea go for it...otherwise your current ram will do the job...

That old ram with bottleneck your system, because it will cause the new ram to lower its frequency to the same as the old ****e stuff, defo take out the current set when you get the new 2x4gb ones, for much better performance,
