Slackware... - Page 2

Thread Starter
Actually went back an installed the first two disks. (Did a "full" install)

Ended up with Xfce though, so I had to go and download the third disk, which contained KDE.

Installed it, KDE crashes when I try to log in. Safe mode kinda works...

So much for "its vanilla so it should just work".

And yea.. I'm trying out new distros since glx_ext_texture_from_pixmap is broken in the latest Virtual Box video drivers.

Surely you must realize as old and serious as Slackware is that this is on you. Either you didn't bother to check the validity of your download or you did not read and install properly or there would be no missing KDE elements. Oh wait maybe thousands of people and I have just been pulling a 10 year punch line practical joke telling everyone
that Slackware is solid and vanilla.

If you aren't going to do it right why bother? .... unless you just enjoy to complain and to harangue?

You're right. It must have been the gremlins clogging up the pipes in my interwebz.

MD5 sums check out. This is a "default" install.

Maybe its something do with the virtual machine, but I don't have issues running any other distros.

Well I'm glad md5 checks out. Frankly I really did expect someone who seems as reasonably knowledgeable as you, Nathris, to have checked that out and was actually surprised that you were having troubles. Perhaps I assumed you just wanted to hate it. Bygones.

Additionally I got the impression that you installed a base system and ran Xfce and then downloaded the 3rd disk and added on KDE. This is not a default install. The default install, marked "recommended", suits most SOHO desktops and especially newcomers to Slack and installs KDE by default.... in it's entirety with the selectable exception of language packs. I know you have this thing about "bloat" so perhaps in addition to actually not doing a default recommended install from Jump Street you manually eliminated things you thought you wouldn't need.

OTOH I suppose it is possible that there are issues with Virtual Machine but I know little about them since if it's worth messing with, it's worth doing the least complicated, least resource limited version as in direct hdd complete install, IMHO. However, I really can't see the logic behind why a library would be missing because of VM and certainly not in a correct install.

I have complete confidence that you could just repair what you have and arrive at a condition where all is well. However in the interest of Time and reduced frustration, I suggest that now that you have all 3 (number 4 is just source) you just reinstall and do the complete recommended install and later yank out what you want to get it as lean as you like.

The only other option I might offer is to visit Alien Bob's site because he routinely builds single CD isos of Slackware Current. Alien Bob is Eric Hameleer of the Slackware Team who is a monster coder (created 64bit Slack almost entirely on his own), prefers some level of package management greater than Patrick Volkerding (and I) prefer, probably an utter workaholic who sleeps maybe 4 hours out of 24, and has FAT pipes with an awesome up.

I'm going to link his main page rather than to the CD image since you already have a full set and could easily find it if you prefer a more minimal but nonetheless complete install set. This blog is just a wealth of well organized, top notch information. Check it out here

Hope this helps make it all come together for you.

It might actually be the same issue I'm having with Arch. Virtual Box updated their guest additions to support Xorg 1.10, and since then I've had nothing but issues with them. I can get proper 2d support, but I get white screened in compiz because the 3d drivers still fail, and I can get into KDE, but there is a ton of corruption.

It's the fact that you are using VB and not Arch. I have current Arch updated, in fact I have some testing libs (my mistake)! KDE works fine, I've been playing a lot of URT since the damn PSN is down. I'm way pissed about that too, almost makes me want to return it for one with a lower FW and put a CFW on it. So much BS... Anyways, Arch + KDE work fine.
