Bottleneck or not????

Thread Starter
Ok I need to know if my system is bottlenecking? Basically when im playing black ops or Cod 5 (seems worse in cod 5 too) I seem to get HUGE fps drops>
For example in cod 5 i can be running around at 125fps the second i look down my sights it drops to 25-30fps for 5-10secs. I get this in black ops too but for some reason not as bad? this never used to happen at all in cod5 and i had my 460 playing it before i got my 480, although i got it worse in bops when i had 460. So is this just my system bottlenecking or am i looking for another issue altogether??

Hmm, the CPU probably isn't bottlenecking the GPU that much, if at all.

Bottlenecking wouldn't cause huge FPS drop spikes like that, bottlenecking usually decreases the overall playability of the game. If it's running at 125FPS for the most part, bottlenecking probably isn't the issue here.

It could be a number of things. The first thing I would suspect would be hard drives prefetching the textures, but I really couldn't say without looking at it. Have you tried doing fresh installs of both games and then trying them again?

No I havn't, but cod 5 has always worked perfectly until I installed my 480. I did a clean install of my drivers etc when I installed the card. And if it is the hard drive whats the solution??

This is most likely the game itself trying to send too much to the GPU.
If when it happens when you look throught the scopes, its not a CPU or GPU bottle neck, but game desgin (like reloading textures, making a over the top complex scene and so on).

Your CPU is more than capable and won't bottle neck the GPU.

In what settings are you playing? (details, AA, resolution)

In cod 5 1920x180 everything maxed out.
In black ops pretty much the same only 4x aa with shader warming on
Although esecially with Cod 5 i should be able to max it out my old 275 ran it at over 90fps maxed out and never had am issue with that :/
Also im not not noticing any other games performing in this manner either.

This looks more like game issue, or profile issue.
Have you made any changes at all in the 3D settings on the nvidia control panel?
If unsure, go there and reset it all to defaults.

It's probably a driver/game issue..

Reinstall the game if it has been installed before GTX480..

Also look for patches for the game..

I have the same setup and no bottleneck there (Q9550 @ 3.9GHz and GTX480 @ 850/1025MHz)..

I play @ 1280 x 1024 with everything on MAX and I get 75 FPS lock (VSync ON) in every game..

CHEERS..
