C3 stepping - Page 2

I wouldn't upgrade to a C3 955/965 from a C2. Gain in speed would likely be less than 10% even if you got a good overclocker.

Absolute minimum would be a 1090T for me, and I'm hoping bulldozer sets the x6 CPUs into the bargain bin. A thuban seems to make about the same amount of heat (or maybe even less) than my C2 955. Case in point, my CPU temps are under control, but the mainboard even with its heatsinked 8+2 phases throttles itself above 3.8 GHz because per my killawatt measurements even when figuring PSU efficiency the CPU can draw north of 200W even when still under 1.50v.
Sorry for being off topic, but how can you tell when the phases throttle themselves? I have the same motherboard as you and I have a 1055T X6 overclocked to 4.0 and NB at 2860 with all 4 memory dimms full. Just wondering becuase I don't feel like replacing my setup.

Thanks

For me the magic cutoff is sustained load at 200+ watts over the idle wattage as measured from the wall. If your board throttles it'll cut the CPU to 4x multiplier as if the CPU wants to thermally throttle, but the difference is your CPU temps will still be in check, and it stays under full load the whole time.

For me it only happens in a linpack run. I only noticed it because of changing run times and finally figured it out with CPU-z showing me what it was doing.

Better than the phases going kaboom, that's for sure.

Best way to tell if it's a C3 is through the model number:

C3 955 - HDZ955FBGMBOX
C2 955 - HDZ955FBGIBOX

If you notice, C3s end with MBOX and C2s end with IBOX.

Even though the C3s use less voltage and overclock higher (also runs cooler), it's not worth the upgrade. I would wait for Bulldozer as others have suggested.

I went from a 955 C2 to a 555(B55 unlocked) C3 and performance was *almost* the same. The B55 could hit 4-4.1ghz with the voltage needed to hit 3.8-4ghz for my old 955 and runs much cooler.

Not if you bought it second hand and it's been lapped.

Tell me, what cpu is this?
