First Amp?

Thread Starter
I've recently sold my desktop and now moved to a laptop + large TV monitor.

However, I miss having a nice dedicated sound card with my HD 555s, and my headphones are lacking with my notebooks audio.

*Can anyone recommend an amp and/or receiver to buy for my headphones?
*Is it as simple as plugging it into my laptop to play music from, and plugging my headphones in?

Budget is under $300, but it to go from a $50 soundcard to a $300 receiver is kinda crazy. I'd prefer something cheaper.

Here's a Dayton 50w per channel amplifier. It'll power a good set of bookshelfs, and / or your headphones just fine. Only $99.

Link.

Is it just for headphones, or do you want to be able to add speakers as well? Is it just for your PC or for multiple devices?

I currently have Z2300s (I know, I know) for fun and loud crap (movies mostly) but I have my headphones specifically for listening to good music, and so I'm looking for something to make that better. No need to add speakers.

Why not do both?

Buy that Dayton T amp for $100, that leaves you $200 out of your $300 budget to buy a budget set of bookshelfs, and a budget subwoofer. This would beat out your z2300's without a hitch, both in loudness and clarity.

You can't possibly enjoy watching movies on those z2300's, when any male voice actor comes from your "subwoofer".

1) It's not really a $300 budget in the sense of "Oh wow, here's $300 on the ground, might as well spend it on music!" I'm a college kid on a college budget, and the most I can possibly imagine spending is $300, but I much rather spend 50, or maybe 100.

2) I really, really don't understand the hate on Z2300s. Everyone I show them too are impressed, both by the loudness of such small speakers and the awesome sub. It's not the clearest set in the world, but it gets the job done on a good budget.

There are people out there who enjoy watching movies with TV speakers (ugh!), so I don't see why I'm a criminal because I like Z2300s. They beat the hell out of anything else out there.

I'm not looking for the HD 555 equivalent for speakers. I just need a cheap set that makes movies awesome to watch. And these do. /rant

And yet your title claims you to be an audiophile. Just sayin'....

It's fine if you want to keep a subpar set of speakers. That $100 Dayton amp would work great for headphones too. But it would also give you the upgrade-ability to a solid 2.1 speaker set later if you wanted to.

lol.. maybe he is also a wine connoisseur that likes wines in boxes.. to the OP if you miss having a nice sound card, have you looked into getting a good portable USB DAC/amp, it seems to me that you are looking at something that sounds good with your headphone and not a whole bookshelf system.

What the OP needs is an external DAC not an amp. DEFINITELY not an amp with HD555s.

Set a budget limit and we can help you get a nice external DAC. A real budget limit. It doesn't seem like you want to spend 300. Do you want to spend 100? 150? 200? 250?

We can come up with DAC/AMPs for all those figures.
