A 5870 and 5850 can be crossfired together. 5850 is about 5 percent slower than 5870 when both are at the same clocks.

You plug in the monitors into the "main" card (5870).

Probably your best scenario right now. Not gonna gain much upgrading so go crossfire and wait for the 7xxx series. I have a 5870 and see no reason for another but if you wanna churn out some better benchmark scores go for it! 5850 will give you a nice bump especially if it OC's nice.

Like I said earlier, with your cpu and current 5870 dont expect much noticeable difference in games, but benchmarks and stuff will look much nicer.

Surely you mean: "Expect almost twice more performance in games."

The 5000 series was bad at scaling, and even with two 5870s you don't get 100%.

Ehh, I wouldn't do it, as good as the 5850's price is, cross firing it with the 5870 will be good but not amazing. You could buy another 5870, they are relatively cheap now compared to how they used to be priced. But if I were you I would get the 6950 and unlock it of course. Buying the 5xxx generation right now isn't necessarily the best idea if you take price out of the picture.
