DELL U2711 or 120HZ monitor

Thread Starter
I have completed my building computer but i still haven't decided for a monitor.
I have gtx 580 lighnting in SLI confir and i7 2600k for CPU.

But I am very confused about what to buy for monitor, it would be worth the 1440p of the dell, with the dell I wont be able to get more thant 60 fps because is 60hz.

It is worth the 120 Hz or the High resolution?
what about the input lag and other things in the Dellu2711 monitor, does anyone has used this monitor for gaming or now about this?

Thanks.

I'm a little bias as im not that interested in 3D. However I have heard some nice things about it.

My vote lies with the U2711.

Unless you play very competitive gaming where you might benefit from the 120Hz (or really want 3D), you will have a far, far better experience with the Dell.

The resolution is only part of why it would be better. The main reason is that the Dell has an IPS panel, and they are so much better than the TN panels of nearly all the cheaper monitors it's absurd.

So, get the Dell, and you'll overall you'll have a much better monitor than getting a 120Hz monitor

To achive more than 60 fps I will have to disable de v-sync right??
What can happen if I disable the V-sync?
If I for example play metro 2033 in 1080p in a 1440p monitor so I can max out, how the scaling from 1440p to 1080p would be?

Many thanks for your advice, I want to buy the monitor this week and I have many doubts.

WWJD?

I think he'd get a U2711.

Edit: for the record, two 580s should handle Metro fine at 1440p. No need to use 1080p. I get 30-40fps with my 560s using DoF and PhysX.

You'd want to run the monitor at its native resolution, scaling always makes the picture look blurry and crap. I'm sure you'd be able to run at the Dell's native resolution with those SLI 580s more or less maxed out (maybe less tessellation or something)

I understand, but If in metro at 1440p I can almost max out, maybe in a game that comes in 3 months lets say I wouldn't be able to max out at that resolution while in
1080p I will, right? I mean in 1080p I will be able to max out games for longer time without upgrade my hardware.
One thing I have heard is that the more fps the game runs smoothly the better right?

What you want 120 hz gaming or playing usually 60 hz casual gaming? I in order hand has a luxery lcd to back up in my room. The only missing are the real leather sofa(usually cost around 4k euro). So I usually sleep/sit on bed when watching at lcd. Lol.

If you'll be doing 3D gaming, get the 120Hz. Otherwise i'd just get the 2711.

BTW refresh rate does not equal FPS.
Does the 60hz refresh rate CLEARLY and obviously bother you at this point? If it doesn't, get the U2711. If it does, get the 120hz. If you say I don't know, it clearly doesn't bother you.

The U2711 will be a gorgeous monitor while you will have little to no real usage for the 120hz one unless you play in competetive or just feel limited by 60hz.

No, but to utilize the refresh rate fully, you want the FPS to match or pass the hz
