[Anand] Retail Radeon 5700 Rebadge - Page 7

It's a matter of principle. If next year they release the cards again as the HD7770 and HD7750, wouldn't you be confused ? Well, not you, the OCN guy who knows the industry a little better than most, but the regular consumer ?

Even to a tech guy who is not on par with the news this can be misleading at first: every other HD6xxx card is either new (HD6450 160 core part) or a re-engineered 40nm core, that does more with less cores, and yet this is just a rebrand + HDMI 1.4a.

Basically I'm saying history is repeating itself.
No. When it was released the HD2900XT was actually a little slower than the 8800GTS 640MB. After driver improvements it fit between the 8800GTS and the 8800GTX. But it wasn't faster.

True.

That article is from September of last year. That was before the industry was informed AMD was moving the numbering scale up. The midrange series would be called HD68xx instead of HD67xx. What you are quoting are todays HD6850 and HD6870.

Would modding the drivers to install on the 6770 not work fine?

/ontopic

Very disappointing move.

yes,
also the 6770 bios should work perfectly fine on a 5770, that's if, you have the appropriate bios for your card, with exactly the same memory and etc
after that you win the "HDMI 1.4" support for free, since this upgrade from HDMI 1.3 to 1.4 seems to be achieved only by the bios upgrade, it's exactly the same hardware,

HD2900XT was competitive against the 8800GTS g80, but in some cases it was much slower, in general the 8800GTS 640mb was a better card.

Hmmm, what ?

Your post is complete nonsense. The HD68xx series is not a rebadge.

The second link you are providing is comparing the HD6670 to the HD5750.

The HD6670 is not a rebadge either. It's a new card featuring 480 cores. It is slower than both the HD5750 and corresponding rebadged HD6750, both of which have 720 cores.
