Should I crossfire?

Thread Starter
I just built my new comp and I put SCII in and this card plays it on Ultra with no problem and is the recommended settings. I am looking to play some BF3 when it comes out on high settings. So I was wondering should I buy another card now to crossfire and if I do can I just plug it in and link them via SATA cables or should I wait and they might stop selling the card? Thanks.

They probably aren't going to stop selling the 6870 for a while, I would just wait to see what performance you get when the game comes out and see where to go from there. Prices will most likely drop by then

Thats another thing I was going to wait and see. I just remember when I had an old 6800 gt OC for my AGP rig and they stopped selling it like a month after I bought it when I wanted to buy another one. I also wanted to make sure I bought the same card to crossfire with.

My suggestion to you is crossfire it, your half way there. You'll get a lot of FPS gain for a second card. Slightly better than one GTX 580 by a tad. AMD 6870 is inexpensive atm too and you can enjoy a powerful gaming experience now.

Until gaming catches up with the card in your system you'll have time however if your not ready yet. You have until next summer easily to crossfire the 6870 if you want.

Example is currently you can still buy 5000 series card atm and the 6000 series have been out for 7 months since November 2010. So you do have time to wait to decide when to pull the trigger for 7 months after that giving you at least until May 2012 to crossfire your AMD 6870.

If you think about it, if you upgrade to a newer card series AMD 7000's or Nvidia 600's you'll only be upgrading to a one card solution which will yield less FPS than two AMD 6870's most likely and if it yields more FPS it will come with a higher price tag anyway.

Make sense?

CFX 6870 will be good for at least another 1 -2 years.

There isn't a game out right now that I can't plow through maxed, except M2033, but with AAA and no DOF it is not a problem.

Not really, cards don't go down that much even when newer series comes out. We're talking $40-$60 at best and flag ship series even less.

AMD and Nvidia manufacturers stop making the older cards eventually and as the stock goes down they can unload what's left easily.

Older cards get sold and in bulk to pre-fab computer companies, like Dell, HP, etc for low prices. Those pre-fab companies alway put two year old GPU's in their systems to compete pricing with each other all the time and sell'em like it's a hot comodity off to those less savy computer users.

6870 CF will rape ANY game out there. but a single 6870 roughly equals a 5870.
i say wait, prices may drop then and upgrade when you need it!

I agree with the wait and see. 6870's will be available and dropping in price for years to come.
