...this will be my main rig for awhile and my last chance to give it one last upgrade.

So do I buy the i7 970 or do I buy the 2600K and a nice Tri SLI board?

WHY!!!!

There is nothing wrong with your sig rig. You are literally pissing your money away into a black hole... There is NO reason to upgrade at all.

What are you using is for? In pretty much all cases the 2600k would be the way to go.

Hmmmm, what do you do with your system?

If you fold then either would be nice, but a 970 would pull more PPD.

If it were me, I'd hold off the upgrade and wait until the end of the year. Let's see what Ivy and Bulldozer can do.

WHAT!!! The 970 doesn't pull more PPD than the i7 2600k. The 2600k obliterates any quad core and trades blows and then wins with the i7 980x!!!!!

The 970 is a hexa-core...

if you go with 2600k, youd also be needing a new bored :/

imo .. save the money and wait for the 2011's to be released later this year

Yeah man an upgrade at this point would be... well not worthless, but not worth it either.

You want to upgrade to a SB platform for the extra X8 on the one PCI-E pathway? Forget it; upgrading would only see you gain 3% @max. You might also score a few FPS upgrade with the 2600k but again it will be so minimal....

Wait for Bull/Ivy. PCI-E 2.0 is what I'm after next.

Gaming, folding, video editing, and in that order.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/142?vs=287

Make sure you read the benchmark, some of them are meant to be lower.

In short, the i7 2600k beats the 980x more benchmarks than vice versa.

Also, it's about £600 cheaper.
