Paint heatspreader

Thread Starter
hey guys, i recently bought a blue set of ripjaws x on newegg for cheap (cl 7 1600 8gb) i bought it blue because i have a p8p67 deluxe i have for my new build. Problem is a while back i got on the amazon maximus deal for 204 bucks and recently i ordered it and now i am going to make that the board for my build. So now the build is going to have a white and red color scheme, but i am stuck with the light blue ram sticks. I would like to know if any of you have disasemble the heat spreader and painted it posibly red or black.

I dont want to go with a set of red ripjaws because mostly all of them have high timings or slow speeds, if anyone can point me to a thread were this has been done, or tell me if its dangerous because the added paint may cause more heat?

thanks

All attemps I've seen to remove ram heatspreaders ended in disaster (ram chips coming off) - so if you're going to do it i'd recommend doing it try it in situ.

Heatspreaders can be glued on or clamped/screwed on with a thermal pad. The ones with a thermal pad you can re&re the heatspreaders, if they are glued don't try it for the reason fluxlite stated above, the ICs come off the PCB easier than the heatspreader comes off the ICs most of the time.

Use a heat gun and gently warm them over (wear gloves as it will be hot) and gently work at the heat sinks. They will come off eventually.

Huh. As I was just lamenting over here, I have the reverse problem: A blue/black build with handsome-but-glaringly-out-of-place red ripjaws.

Did you succeed in getting those heatspreaders off and/or painted? If so, how'd you reattach 'em? And where're our pictures of the finished product?

If there weren't so damn many ways it could go wrong, I'd say we should just swap heatspreaders.
