Exactly... I had 5870's crossfired and GTX470's in SLI (skipped the 480's and went straight to 580's) and experienced similar things.

That's a hex-core which in Cinebench is equal to a 920(used in [H] review).
I don't think any of those games besides Resident Evil 2 is single-threaded so they should be equal in the other games.

Obviously a 2600K would perform even better than both.

Understood but first off, Cinebench is a synthetic benchmark, not actual gameplay which is where micro-stutter comes in to play. I don't think anyone would perceive stutter in any synthetic benchmark as it does not actually impact maximum frame rates....

Second Intel processors frankly scale better in real world gaming than the current gen AMD do. Comparing an AMD chip at 3.2 vs. 4.2 ghz for example doesn't provide any correlation to what an Intel quad core would scale at between say 3ghz and 3.6 ghz. There are plenty of intel scaling tests that confirm this.

link to test done by Defoler on effect of CPU speed on multi GPU..He got 980X at 4.3, 4.0, 3.6, 3.3, 3.0 and 2.5Ghz..Some got benefit from higher speed, some aren't noticeable..but look at perf. gain for 3 and 4-way SLI on Crysis Warhead eek.gif

When you say scale better, you're referring to IPC per core being better. As long as the game isn't bottlenecked by a any thread maxing out at 100% they'll both be able to perform adequately. SC2/Resident Evil 2 for example would do poorly, yes.

Sitting on a work conference call, so I was a bit distracted but yes I agree in theory with your comment.

The link to the scaling test above shows some increases in certain games with multiple gpus. The reviews I was thinking of (done by HardOCP and Anandtech) only examined scaling on a single GPU and as such I stand corrected.

He quoted that same review (with the 1100t) to explain to another guy why his 3.8ghz i5 wasn't fast enough.

3.8ghz on an i5 isn't the same as 3.8ghz on an 1100t. They're vastly different architectures. Otherwise, I wonder if he thinks a 3.8ghz Pentium 4 would be equal to either, as long as it was a single threaded game.

OT: Massive CPU bottleneck FTW.

Re: microstutter. Guys, I have the exact opposite experience.. disable my second card, and the stuttering gets noticeably worse (because the frame rates are dropping substantially.) I have yet to experience "microstutter."

AMD should always edge out at this resolution in 3-way. Crossfire Vram is additive, SLI Vram is not. If you want to game across six bezels, more power to you.
