Pc noob. Best budget build?

Hi guys, first, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong board, I couldn't find a help board or anything.

I'm new to this site and to computer architecture in general so I need your advice on building a desktop for around $1000-1500

I'm mostly worried about compatibility issues with the hardware I buy so I would appreciate any recommended builds, or suggestions on my current build (which I will post a bit later) in case there are compatibility issues.

Keep in mind this is the first time I'm tinkering with computer hardware and that I'm looking for a decent/ capable gaming machine.

Thanks for you help

So right now I'm looking at:

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 16MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST3500418AS-Bare Drive

Processor:AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz 4 x 512 KB L2 Cache 6 MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 140W Quad-Core Processor - Retail HDZ970FBGMBOX

Motherboard:Gigabyte Socket AM3/AMD 890GX/SATA3&USB3.0/A&V&GbE/ATX Motherboard GA-890GPA-UD3H

Ram: Corsair XMS3 8 GB 1333 MHz PC3-10666 240-Pin DDR3 Memory Kit CMX8GX3M2A1333C9

DVD Burner: Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98 - Retail (Black)

Case: ?

Power+Cooling:?

Graphics: XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 PCIE Graphics Card HD577AZNFC

So give me your thoughts on this. Less ram, cheaper motherboard? All suggestions are greatly appreciated
Total thus far: $470

Hi, welcome to OCN, what country do you live in?

Building your own computer is actually very easy.

For your budget, I'm working on a sandy bridge build that you will be extremely happy with.
...

Do you need Operating system, Monitor, keyboard mouse, Speakers?

Do you want a big Full size tower or a Medium sized tower?

I have great student discounts so I don't need any software. Other than that just speakers. I have my own monitor.

As for the tower, whichever will give me more airflow. If they're the same, whichever is sexier

From that video, I like the huge tower.

You might like the Phantom, since you said Sexy.

For Speakers, that would be personal preference or make a new thread in the periphials dept. with how much of your $250 leftover budget you want to spend.

This build will perform better than what you were thinking about.

if your in no rush you could wait a month or so until bulldozer is out to have a better idea what would be best bang for your buck, not too sure if you can get a sandy setup for that money im across the pond.

Ok, well then you can just wait and see if AMD's bulldozer is win.

The build in my previous post will give you a basic idea of what you can get now and I'm sure most people around here will be satisfied with a build like that for a $1,250 budget.

Then wait 'til AMD's Bulldozer architecture hits the market to pick your parts. We don't know how it stacks up to Sandy Bridge yet.
