XAMPP [Windows] Help

Thread Starter
OK, I have a dedicated server (Windows Server 2008 RC2 64 bit) that I am trying to get XAMPP installed on so I can run a few small web interfaces. The problem I am running into, phpmyadmin doesnt want to work and mysql deosnt want to install (even though I went to manually install it and it says it already exists).

Any ideas or help is appreciated. I am willing to let someone on with TeamViewer to help out.

First: Windows?! Dear gawd, WHY?

Now that that's out of the way...

MySQL is part of XAMPP and should already be installed.

What problem are you having?

When I go to run phpmyadmin, it doesnt want to connect to it. Also, when I check to see if mySQL is running via xampp web interface, it shows its not even enabled. The xampp control.exe shows that it is.

Windows > Linux...sorry, it's fact. Safer, faster, etc.

Secondly, I'm guessing he installed them as Services and needs to manually turn them on.

I think you meant to type < instead of >. Linux is indeed safer, faster, etc., than Windows.

Yes, don't let the rose-colored glasses affect your opinion. *rolls eyes*

If Linux is indeed "better", why does 99% of the world use Windows. It must be that 99% of people are incompetent and you and the nerds using Linux are clearly more knowledgeable. Get real, kid. WINDOWS > LINSUX...

99% of the world does NOT use Windows for SERVERS. In fact, Windows is a minority in the server space.

XAMPP is GREAT for a local dev environment, but be careful if you are exposing your server to the outside world. A default XAMPP install is very insecure.

You do have to start MySQL in xampp. Is apache starting up correctly? Which version of XAMPP did you install ( zip archive, installer etc. ).

Do you get an error when you try to start MySQL through Xampp Control? What is it? You may be getting conflicts with other windows software, but that is usually apache conflicting with IIS on port 80.

FloatingDivs is correct in that depending on how you installed it, you may have to go to services and manually start the service.

Can definitely help you out if you give us a little more info.

FloatingDivs....

Do you have any real world server experience? I can tell you from experience that unless it's a windows specific service, it will most likely be run on a linux box mainly due to cost. Gameservers.com uses linux for their servers where ever they can. So will webhosts. Not to mention linux is a safer web hosting server distrobution because it's less suceptable to viruses.

Windows is on 90% of the client side machines, but for servers, it's a much lower percentage based on what is needed. It's not necissarily faster or safer(usually not safer). So please don't let your mouth run about topics you're not every experienced in.

It's a joke that a moderator can make such statements. But, whatever...

As for the Windows comments, anyone who's seen my posts know I'm joking...I use Linux about 90% of the time (waiting until tomorrow to install Ubuntu 11.04) and simply act like a Windows 'tard when making "positive" although ludicrous claims about Windows.
