Strange question, GPU air cooling...?

Thread Starter
I recently took two 120mm fans off of the side of my case, because the mesh that they blew through made them kind of loud, but I want to continue to use all of the parts of my computer to their potential.

BUT, I don't see the need to cool my processor much more than it already is. I've only done a minor OC on my quad-core, and I'm using a single GPU, meaning there's really no point in OCing it higher and my CPU temps are okay.

However, I do like to keep my GPU running as cold as physically possible, and I thought maybe mounting those two 120mm fans right next to it in some way could help cool it. Please note that I'm not going to be doing this to my ****ty 5850, but a 560 Ti Hawk (Twin Frozr III fans) that will be here tomorrow.

Is it worth the trouble of creating a custom mount? Will it even work? Am I nuts? Let me know!

EDIT: I monitored my CPU and GPU temps before and after taking off my case fans, and the difference was fairly negligible (1-2C). I thought I should point that out just so you know that I don't want to put them back on the side of the case, the fan noise was too high to justify the minute change in temps.

Having fresh air blowing directly towards your graphics card is always nice to have, twin frozr cards run cool as i've read/heard. So I reckon you'll be fine without the 'custom mounted fans' you're talking about, BUT, if you can mount them and direct them towards your graphics cards, why not right? It always helps ^_^, will get dusty faster though... just be sure you have enough fans pulling air out of your case to balance it out.

REP+, thanks. I was thinking of finding a way to use the extra PCI sideslots in the case to somehow mount 'em, maybe one on top of the card and one below it. If I do that, should they both be blowing towards the GPU, or both in the same direction? Here's a picture of a computer that looks almost identical to mine (except my GPU is larger)

It's also worth noting that my PSU is a piece of garbage, and there is a 120mm fan on top of it. This is sort of unrelated, but there is a mesh outlet at the bottom of my case and I could mount it with the fan down. Not sure which way is "correct," but I also don't really know if it's going to make my GPU/CPU hotter blowing into the case (or, for that matter, if blowing into carpet will shorten the life of my PSU). Any tips on that?

Not sure if I'm right, but most PSU's suck air from the 'mesh' you're talking about, so it's going to be that the PSU will be sucking air from undearneath the chassis/the carpet and throws the warm air at the back.

The twin Frozr has two fans right? so one fan is blowing air outwards the back of the case and the other is dumping the air inside the case. Not sure if I'm right, but I reckon it's better if you have the fans mounted on the side panel, that way it can suck some nice mild/cold fresh air from the outside refreshing the innards of your chassis. maybe somebody else can enlighten us ^_^

My side intake fan (120mm, 61 cfm) lowered my GPU temp's 7-10c under load.

Was your 1-2c difference at idle? What about under load?

Can you remove the mesh? If you can get fan's blowing on the 5850, It will certainly have lower temp's. Especially under load.

You can always get a PCI Case fan and have it blow straight up on the card.

Ghetto PCI fan-mount bracket! All you need is a 120mm fan, a zip-tie, a PCI bracket, a bit of double-sided tape and about 5 minutes.

It only lowered it ~2C under load :\\ This was tested with Furmark. My fans aren't very good, seriously, I bought them a long time ago because they had purple LEDs and I found that more important than performance like an idiot. But yeah, that's under load. Kind of sad. That's why I was wondering if mounting them closer would help. Wish I could remove the mesh, but I can't.

Regarding PCI Case fans: I forgot about those things completely @.@ That's really smart, but I just want to find out how to make full use of these fans; not necessarily looking to buy anything new. In any case, thanks for the help.

Going to do this tomorrow. I'll post pics. I might take zip-tie the second fan to the end of the first fan, creating an effective 240mm x 120mm fan strip to cool the whole length of the card. Maybe. That is assuming that I can get it mounted without the fans falling over. :3 Should be a fun experience though, I'll update this when I get it done.
