You mean that if I buy a reference 6950 it might not be unlockable? Damn I thought that as long as you stick to reference designs it's okay...

I'll have to reconsider my next upgrade then.

Do you guys think the Sapphire HD6950 2GB 21188-00-40R model is still unlockable?

Now that I think about it, I can still buy it and give it back a day later if it's not unlockable... anyways, what do you think?

I don't think AMD will ever officially release a statement to the effect that they've removed the additional shaders, simply because it would hurt sales.

the potential for unlocking might have had a great effect on the 6950 sales, and if it's not hurting the 6970 sales, there's no reason why AMD would announce anything to upset the cart.

You need to understand!
The March 15th date is only a theory to be save because that was the day AMD announced there would be some "percautionary measures" taken to inhibit their customers from unlocking the 6950.

Still they were only claims and should not be taken seriously.
The truth is AMD is receiving a huge financial boost due to the 6950 unlocking publicity and advertisement forums like ocn.net and others spread due to threads like this

They just had to make a statement to the press in order to avoid legal issues.
That is why they randomly laser cut 20% of the cards they ship to the manufacturers.
It was all intentional and AMD has a history of this marketing strategy and we see Nvidia picking up on it as well

So just note that it is a gamble of wheter or not your card will unlock or not.
But people please there is too much exeggeration and hype regarding this subject.
Wheter your card unlocks or not it does not matter ...it is far more clever to invest in the manufacturer which guarantees the truly important things such as a voltage controller, some structural enhancement for more efficient overclocking and maybe some warranty and packaging extras

The unlock is not that big of a deal and being blown way out of proportion.
Just overclock your card and be happy
Those 6%/3 FPS performance increase achieved by an unlock are not worth either voiding your warranty or possible unstable operation and long term damage of the card.

The boost received by the unlock can easily be compensated with a healthy overclock so stop worrying
