Right? Instead of telling me there are no new updates until I check it again a couple hours later?
What are the updates you keep getting? Are the language packs or other usless updates that you keep declining?

Most of them are random security updates labeled "important". Not to be confused with definition updates for Security Essentials, or Windows Defender.

Well Windows did just put out a large round of security updates, MS office updates, a virus update and some others. It will eventually stop for you though...until the next round of updates that is.

That's because it is Programmed to check for updates once a week on a certain day at a specific hour and if you're off by a minute it doesn't see it

This doesn't make much sense to me...

So you're saying that when open Windows Update, and click "check for updates", it's not actually checking anything?

Well what windows updates notifies you of is all in your personal settings. Default it should only notify you of the important/critical ones. Hence when you do go and check for updates manually you will almost always find at least one.

I do not believe this is accurate, Windows updates just checks it doesn't care of the time. I have seen computers before with the time zones incorrect even have there time off but still collect updates. All there has to be is updates present that are not already installed.

None the less though Windows updates are shoddy at best. At work we are finally migrating out of XP. But I get some of the oddest problems in which the first thing I do is check updates. Sometimes the activeX controls are broke and it hasn't recieved updates for months! Bottom line I mange that stuff myself can't trust Windows.

Sorry for the novel just got into work and haven't finished first cup of coffee...

I updated a machine completely in about an hour just this week. I don't really see what the big deal is. It did a batch of about 70 updates, then about 30, and then SP1, and was just about done.

If you think win7 is bad with updates, try vista, pre-SP1. It takes DAYS to get up to speed if you do it automatically.

no. It will if you tell it to. I said what i did thinking you didn't go in manually

but don't worry much about it the first time i loaded seven on my dekstop and laptop it only took me less than an hour to update. I also recall having to do the process like a few times. It seems it sometimes needs to actually apply certain updates before going on to the next one.

i guess we shouldn't worry too much about it. Unless it fails to install certain updates often. the hard reality is that we cannot make it install everything at once automatically

Actually Vista is what I just upgraded from, was using it since the beta. It's one of the reasons I had to ask if I was doing it wrong since two OS's in a row have had me downloading updates for multiple days like this. Also I think there has been some confusion in this thread. I've been doing all this manually, not using automatic updates.

Windows 7 seems to be done updating though, so whatever. It just doesn't make much sense to me about the OS not wanting to find updates that exist when I first tell it to check, but if I check periodically throughout a day it will keep finding updates that it should of found earlier. Just to clarify, these checks are after I get through installing updates, since there are updates that can't be installed until after certain updates have been installed before them.

A Windows 7 forum I went to with this same question seems to have the explanation I was looking for though. The internal program that determines the installation might not check for updates until you use that function, than it flags it for updates. This may not be accurate, but it does make sense as a possibility.
