Can't get a stable Q6600 @ 3.2GHz (First time OCing)

Hi guys,

I'm new to overclocking, but I think I understand the basics. This is my first time so I'm just trying to get it stable, but Prime95 spits out hardware failure errors:

Quote:
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
My multiplier is set at 8.
FSB is set at 400.
8 x 400 = 3200 (3.2GHz)
My temps are fine: ~40 - 50 under load.

Everything else is auto. I tried different voltages for CPU and RAM but I still get the same errors (I figured it was best to leave them on auto until the FSB and multiplier is alone is stable)

Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes auto is not the way to go. This is what I use for 3.6, 400 FSB on my Q6600 DFI X48

Vcore 1.4v
CPU PLL 1.47v
NB 1.4v
VTT 1.4v
CPU GTL 0.67

Wow thanks, that was quick!

Sorry, but this is my first time OCing so I'm not quite up with some of what you have listed. Do you mind if I ask a few questions?
  • What exactly is CPU PLL, VTT, and CPU GTL? (I'm guessing NB is North Bridge).
  • Would these voltages work for all Q6600s or does it also depend on the motherboard and RAM? (I hope I'm not damaging anything =p)
  • Would these work for 3.2GHz? Is the general idea to start higher and work your way lower to get the bare minimum voltage?

Hope these reads will help you. A good solid OC may take you some time. Be sure you are monitoring temps and Volts while you OC. Take lots of notes of what you change and how it works. It is best to start out with small steps and work your way up..

Your MB may list things by a different name.

OCCT, Coretemp, CPU-Z, IntelBurnTest are just a few if you have not found them.

Thanks mate, I'll check out those links after work. In the meantime I think I'll only OC to 3.0GHz - apparently the Q6600 handles that really well with auto settings, then when I'm clued up a bit more I'll push it further

Cheers again.

Yes if its a G0 revision chip. cpu-z will tell you this.
have you got 2 x 2gb or 4 x 1 gb ram. as 4 sticks of ram is harder on the NB than 2.
if you have 4 then raise the NB voltage a couple of notches.

you should unlink your ram (this means leave it alone, and at stock speed) so you know it does not interfere with the cpu overclock.
but at the settings you have now, the ram will be fine as its running at stock speed.
fsb is 400mhz, ram is @ 800mhz (ddr2 ram is 400 x 2 = 800mhz)
so in cpu-z your fsb/dram ratio will be 1:1

i would still unlink it until you have your cpu overclocked.
as if you leave it linked and you increase the fsb to 450, then the ram could will try to run at 450 (450 x 2 = 900mhz) and could fail,

Q6600 are fine upto 1.5v for 24 hr use. mine needs 1.39v for my 3.3ghz, but its the older and hotter B3 revision.

i usually take it in steps.
keep increasing fsb until it wont boot.
then increasing the voltage by 1 notch, this will usually fix it, but sometimes i have had to increase it by 2 notches.
then increase the fsb again and so on......
