Very Confused on BIOS setting for drives

Hi there. I am having problems with a new rig I am configuring – or trying too! Specifically, the drive configuration in BIOS is the issue.

I have a new Gigabyte GA-8900FXA-UD5 (revision 3.1 biggrin.gif that is capable of AMD3+) motherboard in a Thermaltake V9 BlacX.

What I am trying to achieve is to be able to use ACHI with TRIM (RAID not necessary) like this example.. Then have all my programs and Windows on the SSD with the data etc on the 1TB drive, with a third drive to be used for backup purposes. Problem is I have having a huge amount of trouble configuring the BIOS settings and would appreciate some help please.

Drives are:
Corsair SSD 128 – shown as IDE 0 Master
WD 1T FAEX – shown as IDE 0 Slave
WD 1T EADS – shown as IDE 1 Master
Blank – IDE 1 Slave
DVD – shown as 2 Master.

When I installed the drives, I loaded the Bios to Optimized Defaults and then installed Windows 7 64 bit.

Here are a few of the setting from the “Advanced BIOS Features” options. Not sure they are all correct.
AMD C1E Support – Auto
Virtualisation – Diabaled
HDD Boot Priority – SSD then HD then DVD
HDD S.M.A.R.T. Compatibility – Disabled
IOMMU Support – Disabled

Now to the real page of Double Dutch/Greek – “Integrated Peripherals

Here are the settings:-
OnChip SSATA Controller – Enabled
OnChip SATA Type – Native IDE

Next two are (Blued out with no option to change)
OnChip SATA Port4/5 Type – IDE
OncChip SATA RAID5 Support – Enabled (Dunno how that happened!)

On Chip SATA3.0 Support – Enabled
Next one also blued out and unable to change – ONChip Port as ESP with (Press Enter)

Onboard GSATA/IDE Ctrl – Enabled
Ditto………………Mode – IDE
Onboard ESATA controller – Enabled
Onboard ESATA Mode – IDE

Now what to I need to change? (Besides my brain which is now totally confused.) frown.gif

This may, or may not be of any use but whenever I install windows I always disconnect all other drives (in your case all but the SSD). Load windows and than connect other drives and relocate destinations. From what I remember no real benefit to using ACHI. But I will also admit I've setup an SSD with TRIM. I'm sure others may be able to help you more with that.

There is a benefit from AHCI regarding I/O s ,less bottlenecking when HDD is in use by different programs.

Any device connected to the SATA ports will appear as IDE drive when in IDE Mode.
When the AHCI is enabled the SATA BIOS starts working and in the main BIOS they may appear only in boot order setup.

TRIM is in the drive from my knowledge it s not related to AHCI or IDE Mode as it s done at the SSD controller level.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I installed again from scratch and only had the SSD loaded. That solved the problem. applaud.gif
