[Hardware Canucks] HD6870 Roundup: Diamond, PowerColor, MSI, Sapphire, XFX

Quote:
In order to get a clearer picture of what AMD’s board partners have on offer, we canvassed retailers’ pages and came up with a list of five HD 6870 boards that piqued our interest. Some like the ones from PowerColor, XFX, Sapphire and MSI deviate from the reference design in extreme ways while Diamond’s card sticks to a known layout while offering higher clock speeds. This should make for a good cross section of the current selection of available HD 6870 cards.

Even though all five cards we are testing in this roundup are quite a bit different from one another on a number of levels, not one of them currently costs more than $219 after rebates. So the potential for value-oriented performance is certainly there but will some of them be too close to the GTX 560 Ti’s price for comfort?

As for who wins, smile.gif

Yeah, those 6870's seem like a monster of a card now, especially if you crossfire them. But alas, I need DP for BOINC so I'm constained to the upper end cards and price frown.gif

I'll give you that, the motherboards have been improving over the past year or so, but still not on the level of asus or gigabyte. Although, like I said, your gpu's use the best non-reference pcb's on the market imo, with the best stock coolers.

In both cases, keep up the good work. smile.gif

Agree, two years ago I would have never bought and MSI product, now I guess I wouldn't go for any other graph card than MSI (or Asus.. or maybe XFX.. possible PNY as well.. but no other!).

Its obvious that MSI knew they had to do something dramatic to stay in business, I believe MSI succeeded.

Isn't 6870 supposed to overtake 5770 not 5870? If so that its pretty amazing that it sometimes performs better than 5870 in my opinion.

Wow, go MSI biggrin.gif Wonder if it will be worth it to wait for a 7xxx or buy this card? tongue.gif
