What happened to cards like the 6800 Ultra?

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
It seemed like back then Nvidia and ATI would try their hardest to take their flagship cards and just push them to their limits. What ever happened to cards like this?

Marketing, greed, money, you know, the usual.

Both Nvidia and AMD still make awesome cards IMO.

Ahh I don't really see what greed has to do with this. Marketing has hit the nail on the head though.

The current trend from ATI & Nvidia is to release a chip lets say GTX 560ti, then from there the vendor's are allowed to take the chip and go crazy with different PCB & heatsink designs. From memory back in the 6800 era, their really was only reference design cards.

that card was made by 3dfx not Nvidia
er well based on a planed 3dfx card

no GeforceFX was the 3dfx card that nvidia bought, thats well documented.

But think of it this way today

6200LE = GT420
6200 =
6600 = GTX 550 TI
6600GT = GTX 560 TI
6800 = GTX 570
6800GT = GTX580
6800Ultra = GTX590

But i guess we could go back in time to the worst time ever in tring to figure video cards out

Its because they cater to a large mainstream audience now, its not as niche as it used to be, enthusiast is profitable but small corner of their market.

overclocking has now become an easy almost automatic thing.

back in the day we had to volt mod and break out the solder or pencil if we wanted more volts. so companies could just increase volts/clocks and make the product a premium product. now they have to give more shaders, cores, etc.

6970 or gtx 580 is the 6800 ultra.

planned maybe but it wasn't the 6800 nvidia said themselves that was an entire inhouse design, after how poorly the Rampage chip preformed Nvidia ditched that entire idea.

So what are you saying, that now Nvidia is not pushing their GPUs to the limit ? Just look at the GTX 590, it's so hardcore it catches on fire...
