E8400 to Sandy or wait for Ivy? - Page 3

Overclock your E8400 and wait.
Good things are coming.

For what it's worth, I'm waiting for Ivy Bridge at the least. Remember Conroe to Wolfdale? Intel's claiming big gains, but who knows if that's true or not. I've even entertained waiting for Haswell, but that's a bit too far off to say and I doubt I'll wait that long. You could go now and then get Ivy Bridge, but I'm not keen on spending over $200 on a CPU for a year or less (I know you could sell it, but still). If you wait, you get a better motherboard/chipset possibly, and who knows what Bulldozer will be like.

Yup go for Sandy. In another 2 years You'll have to go to Whiskey Bridge or Hot-Dog Bridge cause Intel cannot make CPUs compatible with one socket Bunch of idiots.... But seriously if You really need it just go for SB and You'll be more than happy

Assuming you have the budget for it now, I wouldn't wait. The SB chips will devour anything you throw at them now. Even if BD or IB are substantially better, will the games advance enough that your new SB setup will struggle with them? I highly doubt it. If you want a new rig, then just do it. What's on the market right now is pretty darn good and its priced well.

I would say wait. This ivy`s will be uber and it would be sad that you spend all your bucks now. Then comes ivy and your SB build is much slower.

I'd go Sandy bridge now, but at least wait until you can get a Z68 motherboard as they are under a month away!
Despite the risk that you might die in the months leading up to Ivy Bridge, I'd advise you to wait and pick up Bulldozer if you can't wait that long or Ivy if dying feels like a long time from now.

I went from a 4200MHz E8400 to 2500K @ 4500MHz (for now) and it's one of the best choices I've made in a while. I too wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it but the increase in power is nothing short of amazing. If you need a lot of CPU horsepower I would say go with Sandy Bridge. If your E8400 is still doing everything you want it to do then I guess you can wait until Ivy Bridge is out.
