it is amazing how much money people spend on metal/plastic boxes.

the same can be said about anything else. a case is both form and function. buying high-end hardware and shoving it into a small boring case is like framing expensive artwork in cardboard, or putting $40 tires on a Ferrari.

considering how much alot of other hardware costs, most cases are relatively modestly priced.

dude, most cases are sheet metal and plastic. the cost to make them in china/asia (where most of them are made) is probably less than 3 bux. yet we get conned into spending 50/100 bux or more for a good case.

other items like cpu's and gpu's and power supplies i can understand. there is alot of engineering and fabrication involved in that hardware.

a case..... metal presses and plastic molding. not so impressive as to command a 100 buck or more price point.

reminds me of the monster cable debate. if you want to spend a few hundred bux on an optical cable or an hdmi cable go right ahead. i think i will spend 3 bux at newegg.

when it comes down to it most cases are just metal/plastic boxes. common sense says that a metal/plastic box does not cost 100 bux.

While I admit that sometimes people will spend a lot of money on a case that is more of a status symbol than anything else, most people spend an appropriate amount. The cheap cases tend to not provide very good cooling and/or are noisier than better built cases, but one doesn't need to spend a fortune to get a case that has good cooling and low noise as well as having enough room to hold all of their hardware.

And what is wrong with spending more for a case that the user/owner feels has a more pleasing look to it? Of modifying the case to look a certain way? Computing to a lot of enthusiasts is a hobby so there is nothing wrong with indulging their creativity. By your reasoning everyone should be driving around in a plain jane black box automobile, every home would be plain white with plain white walls and no pictures, knick knacks, or other color or decorations. You know darn well that won't work.

So get real. It's a hobby. If you want a plain jane cheapo box fine. No one is trying to talk you out of that. But don't try to convince others that they need to do so, especially on an enthusiasts forum

totally agree that this is an enthusiast forum and people can spend their resources however they choose.

but can you agree that often times we get gouged on the price of what is essentially a box made of pressed metal and plastic?

i am not on overclock.net because i don't like this hobby. (look at my sig rig) i am here because i love building computers and have been doing so longer than many folks on this forum have been alive. i actually saved b.a.s.i.c programs to cassette tapes back in the 1980's as a storage medium. yes you read that right. a cassette tape. sometimes it would take as long as the tape would play in order to run a simple program. and looking under your name i actually had an original commodore 64 with all of the bells and whistles. lol.

so my point is that these metal/plastic boxes cost too much. not that folks should not enjoy them.

I've been using, repairing, and building computers since the mid 70's. My early overclocking experiences involved soldering different frequency crystals to motherboards.

While yes, some cases are overpriced the idea that they only cost $3 to 5 to make like you stated in one post is absurd. Your argument is completely without merit and so far from reality as to be ludicrous. I've taken old cases to scrap yards and got $3 and up as scrap metal for ONE case.

Steel is worth more as scrap (as of now), and is more dense. Steel cases are always way heavier.
