Wasted money on case - Page 7

All cases are not equal.I have an Aerocool Vx9 that was $40,and yeah it probably cost them $10 in China to make.I also have a Zalman Z9 plus that cost $70,and it is worlds above the Aerocool. The material in this case, the paint are top-notch.It has 4 120mm quiet fans which would easily cost me $5 a piece. It has a variable fan-controller,and temp sensor and display. Then you have to figure the design, which may seem simple but is actually really complicated to design something to fit multiple hardware configs, and provide good cooling, and make it quiet. You really have no clue if you think cases are just a square box.Makes me think you have never had a good quality case.Case-modding is a hobby, just like building models or tricking out your auto.

I just though that it was funny that you were comparing case manufacturers to Monster Cable. Cases aren't that expensive.

You're completely discounting the R&D and the overhead required to make a case. To say that it costs $5 to produce cases in China is ridiculous.

Especially since the actual difference between Monster cable and reasonably priced alternative cables is almost nil while the difference between a $90 CM 690II and a $30 Apevia is quite profound. One will be quiet and cool well while the other will be noisy and a good 8 to 10C hotter with the same hardware. Sure there are some cases where you are basically just paying for the name like you do for Monster Cable, for the most part you pay extra for features and build quality and get something for the extra money.

Another point is once you buy the perfect case, you are pretty much set for life. Just keep recycling the case in newer builds and save money.

They are made out of steel, so its not like they are going to get damaged. The only way they wouldn't last for life is if you insist on having USB 4.0 cables in the front or some bull****.

I'm planning on buying a CM 690 II or HAF X for my current build, and then saving the Antec 600 (which I got for 30 bucks) to put all the parts in when I sell my computer and update to a new build. Then repeat the process.

It isn't that difficult to modify the case and replace the USB 2.0 ports with USB or USB 3.0 ports as needed, and USB 4.0 ports when they come out. I've seen several people do that already in the forum.

Hey it takes all types... I didn't mind the LED beat/bass response of that case project mentioned in post 10, something different eh?

Exactly!

I love my CM Centurion and am happily using it many years on (although I could be tempted by one of CM's HAF series cases), I even bought an early HP tool-less case at a "PC swap meet" because I liked it's spacious odd looking design (Vectra VL420)

When I look at a stock OEM PC housing I don't see a beige/generic case, I see a blank canvas

just for clarification i am not oppossed to having a good case or modding a case. that is not my point.

my point is that the markup on them is ridiculous. if you choose to spend your resources on them that is your right to do. supply and demand.

but that does not make the markup scenario any better.

i am into computers, home theater and car performance/audio. four very expensive hobbies. the markup on all four is ridiculous.

The markup for most of the products is a LOT less than most people think. It isn't close to the markup you are trying to suggest. Sure, there are a few products that do have high markups, but very little in the way of computer components have the type of market that overpriced Monster Cables have. Computer products that do have overly high markups are Microsoft Software.

But this has nothing to do with this thread. The OP wasn't saying that the money he spent on the case itself was a waste. What he was saying is that his poorly executed attempted mod of the case turned his case into a wreck and ruined his original investment in a good case. There is a big difference and personally I think this discussion has drifted far enough off topic already and needs to return to the original theme. If you want to continue it you should start a new thread about it.

Lesson learned.

Novice modders should practice on old cases lying around or easily obtained. All it would cost would be some cutting discs/jigsaw blades/rattle cans of paint, a roll of masking tape, time, and patience.

I remember my first mod was cutting two holes in my side panel to feed air to my CPU and GPU. I practiced on a piece of scrap sheet metal, drawing my template, practicing how the jigsaw worked and how tight I could go before going to town on the actual steel side panel.

Also, who tries melting paint off of something?! Sandpaper or a random orbit sander, sand or bead blasting, or chemical strippers are the best options...
