Need some help with virtualization software - Page 2

yeah you won't get good framerates at all at this point.

libvirt+kvm/qemu + SPICE PROTOCOL WOOOOO

the virt-manager package in gentoo has a "spice" as an option. I haven't tried it yet as the package is still masked and spice is probably too new. But that's where we'll be in a few months. Spice protocol. hd games/movies over the network. I have no idea how it works.

has anyone else seen or heard about this yet? If it's as good as i think it might be, i might as well just sell all this damn hardware and let someone else with a boatload of hardware provide a VM service for me over the internet, a la multics

Already heard of SPICE. Already tested it. Needs a bit of polishing, but it has a lot of potential. Right now only 2D video acceleration is supported; but 3D is on the roadmap.

The big issue with graphically intensive programs in VMs stems from the fact that video cards are emulated in most VM programs. They are not directly bridged to and therefore their potential can't be harnessed.

VM's big use is still for running servers and deploying business workstations.

I use VMware Workstation 7, it's a great software. I use it to multi-client my MMORPG's. Don't expect the graphics of games to be the same as your main/host computer, it is terrible graphics. But useable.

I've done some research myself and I think Parallels Workstation 4.0 Extreme is your best bet for gaming on virtual machines as it can utilise your host computers graphics card.
