8800GT/460GTX SLI and non-SLI PSU Questions

Thread Starter
First, the questions:
1) What's the minimum cost for a psu that I can get max performance out of a single 8800GT (with my current system but with an AMD x2 3GHz upgrade)?
2) What's an adequate psu that I can get max performance (w/ some headroom) out of an SLI 8800GT/DDR3/4GHz config?
3) What's an adequate psu that I can get max performance (w/ some headroom) out of an SLI 460GTX/DDR3/4GHz config?

(Examples and links of psu's would be greatly appreciated)

4) Will these psu's fit into my emachine T5062 (current PSU specs [roughly]: http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/300-...x-300-12ed.php t5062 tower specs)?

Why I'm asking:
I haven't yet decided if I'm going to SLI this system. I'm going to upgrade my cpu to AMD x2 3GHz and get a new power supply this week. I was thinking I'll just minimum-upgrade this single-card system (and practice overclocking). I'll skip my 8800GT SLI idea altogether, keep this system, and save to build a seperate SLI 460GTX system (in approx 6-9 months). It would be awesome just to hear general opinions of what other people would do in my position.

Thanks for taking time to read this post.

Note:
I have 1000 watt-aphobia , so although I want some headroom, lower wattages are preferred.

Any decent 500w will do just fine.

Also it is a GTX 460 not 460GTX.

It is about amperage not wattage here (but you still need to take it into consideration). If the PSU can supply the amps then it can most likely power both cards.

Card A needs 30A and Card B needs 15, you need something that can push 45A and supply the wattage.

1. A good 400W can easily allow you to max out the 8800GT.
2. A good 550w PSU should be enough for the SLI 8800GT.
3. A good 600w PSU should also be fine with a 460 SLI if you plan to also overclock it. Else a 550w should be enough.

What you linked won't be enough at all.

If you want a good PSU with enough head-room, get a 650w which should be ok for the next upgrade as well, if you plan to keep using low power usage GPUs.

Also even if you put a 1000w PSU, it won't consume 1000w, but just as much as the system requires.
If you system will pull 400w at full stress, a 80% efficiency PSU will draw about 500w from the wall socket, no matter if its a 1000w PSU or 1200w PSU or a 600w PSU.

A 650 (a decent one) can power 2 560Ti no problem. Example of a good PSU is in my sig rig. The TX650

haha, yea GTX 460. I'm in the process of moving into my new place, and I'm so tired and delirious.

Yea, I read up about the amps stuff. Thanks for your input.

Thank you defoler for your answers. It really helps me on making my decision. Also thanks for that last tidbit about huge psu's.

I think I'm just going to keep this system a single card and build a separate system.
