i7-2600K overclocking questions

Hi,
I'm overclocking i7-2600K with Asus Sabertooth P67 mobo. So far it's stable at 4GHz with vcore 1.230V. But when I run prime95, CPU-Z shows that vcore is 1.152, which is much lower than what I set in BIOS(1.230V). My question is if 1.152 is enough for stress test why it can't go lower? I'm new to OCN, so did I miss something when overclock the chip? Thanks

LLC is kicking in. Run a blend test for 1 hour. Small FTT to find Max temps. For lower volts. Use offset -0.040. At least try.

When you put load on the chip it pulls a LOT more current and the core voltage droops down, LLC (load line calibration) is meant to fix this by essentially boosting the voltage under load.

1.152v for 4ghz is pretty good, though

It's not running at 1.152V. I have to keep it at 1.230V, which is relatively high compare to others.

I believe CPU-z is reading it incorrectly. Load up something else in addition to read it like HWmonitor. My cpu-z no longer reads mine correctly for some reason.

1.23V isn't high at all. What i happening is called Vdroop. Under load the CPU uses much more current and the voltage drops. It is a specification so that voltage doesn't spike when the CPU unloads.
If you try to set 1.152V in the BIOS, then under load the voltage will go even lower due to Vdroop and probably won't be stable. However, you can set load line calibration (LLC) in the BIOS which will prevent Vdroop. This may allow you to set a lower Vcore in the BIOS and remain stable.

Um, well, you don't need loadline calibration at 4 ghz, unless someone has the worst 2600k known to man. You should be fine with all auto voltages, or even 1.25v set in BIOS without LLC.

Don't worry about that droop. it keeps your chip healthier, cooler, and lasts longer. Only start caring about it when you start pushing towards 4.5 ghz. Then a lot of droop will make you start bsod'ing at load...and that's where you have to start tweaking with loadline calibration.

I just googled LLC and learned a little bit, thanks for the info, I will set LLC to high and see what happens.

You really don't need LLC at that low voltage. It's only if you ever think about trying to reach higher clocks and vdroop/vdrop is the reason getting BSOD.

Basically. At 4.0 you should be able to use everything on Auto. If you use an offset of lets say -(minus)0.040 your idle volts should be low and at load it should be at whatever it needs to be, maybe a little higher/lower.

If 0.040 gives you a BSOD after running prime95 blend test within an hour, try 0.030. Never go +0.000. It's not needed.

Using offset usually gives your lower voltages and still the same stability as with using a fixed vcore.

I gave up using a fixed vcore, now only using offset.
