Studio Setup Desk Mod

About a year ago I saw a desk made by 9x Media that had the DVD drives built in, the USB ports in the desk, etc.. I was blown away by this, as I was never a case modder or anything of the sort. Since then I've wanted to make my own desk mod but never got around to it.

A few weeks ago I decided to make a new Sandy Bridge build for my Dad, this was my first build ever. I was really impressed with how it ran so I decided I wanted one too. After a bunch of research I found a bunch of inspiring projects that were done (and a few still going on) that got me motivated to build the desk mod I've been wanting to build for quite some time.

Anyway, I had some grand ideas and still do on how everything would work but after a few quick SketchUp drawings I finally settled on the basic look and feel of the desk, it's much simpler than I had originally wanted but I think it'll be much easier to accomplish.

Here is my initial sketch. I was very keen on having an L-shaped desk.

Here is my much simpler desk.

As you can see the setup will have 3 monitors and an TV mounted above it. The TV is for previewing video edits, etc.. I'm also going to have my XBOX 360 hooked up to this TV as well so I'll need to build a place for it in the desk. The monitors I'm using are the Samsung PX2370's I ordered them and when I got them I was bummed that I hadn't researched the fact that they had no mounting options..that kind of bummed me out but other than that they are great monitors. I started laying a few things out but I don't really have the details yet. By the way the walls are my room to scale..well my garage that was converted into my room.

I actually have most of the components I'm going to use and I'll post them at a later time but for now I have a question.

I'm going to run liquid cooling, 1 x DVD Drive, 1 x Blu-ray Drive, 2 x Hot Swap 3.5 HDD, 1 x SSD, LED Lights, 6+ 120mm Fans, Radeon 6870 GPU, in addition to my i7 2600K/ASUS Sabretooth motherboard..I have a Cougar 1000x Power Supply, do you think I'll need a secondary supply?

For now, I'm going to be brainstorming on how I'm going to build the desk itself now that I have a general idea. Feel free to post any suggestions or comments. I'm hoping this is a pretty quick project so I should have pretty frequent updates.

After more research and thought I put together another SketchUp of the desk. I decided the desk should be modular so the back part of the desk will simply be made of 4 boxes. The front will have the desktop and the two legs.

The desk itself will be matte black and will be put together with metal brackets. These brackets will be painted either blue or orange, or maybe something else depending what kind of finish I can come up with.

Now that I have a more detailed plan I'm going to get to work. Here's a little pictured of my workspace. Basically I converted my garage into a room/mini halfpipe. I'll be working mainly in the halfpipe so we'll see how that goes.

Awesome! Got to love the desk builds.

Sub'd! If not just to see you construct this thing while riding the halfpipe

Thanks sprower, your desk is much more pleasing to look at than what I'm going to do. Maybe next one..

Got some work in today..bunch of problems but I pushed through and made some progress.

First off I brought out the table saw and realized I didn't know where the rails or guides were..useless. I went down to home depot and picked up this cutting guide and used the circular saw for the cuts. This will mean more work later but thats fine.

Once I got some of the pieces made I laid out the how my mounted components will be placed.

Did the power buttons first.

Ended the day with everything mounted. My cuts were horrendous..probably cause I was rushing but I'm putting a trim around all the cuts so they won't be too bad when all is said and done.

All in all, it's a pretty tight space to work on something like this but I'm making do. Anyone have any ideas for a trim? I was thinking Formica or another laminate or possible a metal trim. The desk itself is most likely going to be matte black.
