The practice makes perfect seem to make sense to me, and then I will move on to OC my phenom rig. First of all I would like to ask, which temps should I be monitoring? Its a little confusing. is it the core temp or the CPUTIN in HWmonitor. I also have the coretemp program or Aida 64, are either of these better to use?

Which program is better depends on what is easiest for you to use. I personally have never liked Aida 64, since 10 years ago it kept recognizing my hardware wrongly and made a real mess in my head smile.gif But now it may be perfect, I don't know.

Coretemp is a widely used alternative, I personally find HWmon easier to find my way around. So that's why I use that.

As of which temp to look at- at low temps (under 60C) Core temp is more accurate. At high temps (above 60) CPUIN is more accurate. I've heard that from an AMD rep.
I can't personally confirm that info though. I've always used the core temp, other people always pay more attention to CPUIN temp. Safest route is to pay attention to whichever is higher and try to keep it under the CPU's Tmax.
Sometimes core temp is 10C higher than CPU temp, sometimes it's the other way around. It's a mess really... smile.gif

Thanks for the replies guys smile.gif Yeah, I got itchy fingers and set to work on the phenom in my sig rig anyways.
I do have a couple more questions as this unfolds.
This LinX program, is the GFlops result related to performance?
My phenom at stock produces results of around 42.xxx GFlops. I raised the multi to get 3.6Ghz and kept the lowest stable voltage and at this point got 45.xxx GFlops. However, when I pushed for 3.7Ghz this goes back down to 42.xxx and on one of the tests as low as 39.xxx.
As far as I'm aware no errors & acceptable temps = stable overclock, but if overclock is reducing performance something has to be wrong, right?
Should I raise the CPU-NB to gain performance now? or maybe the voltage?
I did read that ideally the CPU-NB should be 3 times the memory speed (ie. ddr3 1600... 800*3=2400)

Yes, Gflops is related to performance
Yes, *if everything else was identical and no background programs were using the CPU*, if the gflops are lower after OC, something is wrong
No, higher NB is better than 3x RAM speed (if you can push higher)

I had RAM at 666Mhz, but NB above 2k game me significant speed boost. Same goes with the 800Mhz RAM when I boost the NB to 2600Mhz. So that 3x RAM theory is bogus smile.gif

sorry, that was supposed to say "ideally at least 3 times ram speed. anyhow, my sempron 145 finally came through the post from china and have been checking out the oc performance of it. It is mounted on an asrock n68-s (sadly not the UCC version) with a single 2GB stick of kingston hyperx 800mhz. Quite frankly, it is scary how well its doing. so far, I have the ref. clock @275 (*14 Multi so a little over 3.8Ghz) and stock VID of 1.35 (though CPU-z shows 1.368). not run into a single error so far and have not exceeded 35c max temp, and all this on the stock cooler from my phenom???
However, this mobo downgrades to HT1.0 and for some reason it will not pass 1095Mhz, even with the *5 multi it's still only 1095 and I have no idea why? it should be around 1375 @ 275*5, but its not, could anybody enlighten me?
Also, it is getting difficult to keep ram speeds under rap, any ideas of the clock capabilities of hyperx blu ddr2 800?

Custom PC mag did a DDR2 super test a couple of years ago and they said that the HyperX weren't at all great at overclocking but that was back when DDR2 was first released. They might have revised them since then, so it all comes down to yoir individual sticks of RAM. As for that little Sempron of yours I'm quite impressed. I wish my Athlon would hit a 275Mhz buss speed because that would give me a 4.26Ghz clockspeed! Wow! It's too bad that propus hits the wall at 3.6-3.8Ghz.

Yes, it is a shame I had to stop with the phenom at 3.8. but this is on the grounds of temps, the zalman CNPS5X is not the best cooler of choice, but was certainly cheap and cheerful. next payday will see me ordering a H60 I think. Will be a first experience with water cooling for the phenom, and will free up the zalman for this mighty little sempron. though the mounting orientation is different on that board, so the fan wouldn't be pointing toward the rear of the case?

The zalman. I was looking at that little cooler for my rig. But then I saw the Hyper 212 EVO. Give that cooler a try. It's. absolutely scary how well it does it's job. My Athlon wouldn't go past 3.4 on the stock cooler due to temps. But then I put the CoolerMaster on and raised the volts to 1.55 and got to 3.8. I could probably hit 4 if I fed it 1.6 or 1.65 volts but apparently the chips. don't last long at that voltage. Apparently only two months or so. So hitting 4 on a phenom with the Hyper 212 should be a piece of cake. thumb.gif

Where do you have your numbers from?

I meant above 1.6v, I said you should set it to under 1.5, because in your specific case, you end up with ~1.6 anyway.
I've heard of chips that lived for only about 4 months @1.7v.
A PhenomII I know survived something in the lines of 2 weeks @2.0v.

Those things aren't an exact science - all chips' lifelength is different, and all get worn differently by voltage and heat, same as all OC differently. But keeping things under 1.6v is somewhat a guarantee that your chip will survive at lest long enough to become outdated - meaning you'll upgrade before it dies smile.gif That's all an average scenario.
This is where I got it. It was back when I was looking for help on overclocking my chip. I am thinking about pushing up my voltage to 1.6v to try and push out 4Ghz. But I get a 0.1v of vboost from my motherboard. So if I push to 1.6v I'll actually be getting 1.7v. I am trying to work out if It is worth it. My temps are at good at the moment at 1.55v. But I really want that extra speed... I dunno... Thinking hard!
