PC turning off

Thread Starter
One of my friends is experiencing random shutdowns after few minutes of use both while gaming and idle. It's not a new system, but the problem only appeared recently. He says it's a prebuilt, but that he's put an HD 6870 in it instead of a GT220. I assumed that it's a PSU or motherboard problem since it's not blue screening, just suddenly turning off. One of our clan mates said that it couldn't be a PSU problem, because then it wouldn't turn on, but I was thinking it might be the OVP or OCP shutting it down (even though it sounds weird that it shuts down while idle). What do you think?

He doesn't have any IRL gamer friends so he can't borrow anything for testing and he's not keen on paying for new HW without being sure.

Id go for mainly a psu fault and not the ocp or ovp but more that their is a lack in voltage being supplied and creating an unstable system. Im positive that a prebuilt or factory computer would not have a psu capable of powering a hd6870.

If its not the psu id look at heat issues that might be causing a shutdown. If your cpu was getting way too hot it will if the protection is enabled shut the pc down, not blue screen but rather just cut the power, however this depends on your processor and board, some processors dont shut down just throttle, some processors support it but the board doesnt.

Ocp and ovp will only trip if their is more voltage beeing put into the psu or if there is more current being pulled from the psu than normal rates (eg a short)

it's difficult to say.

could you post details of his full setup? how are his temps?

Tell him to run various stability tests on each of his hardwares. CPU/GPU/RAM/PSU. Tell him to update his mobo's BIOS. You could possibly isolate the problem by doing this.

He says his temps are good, but I saw that tmpin1 and 2 in HWMonitor are at >80 C. Might be faulty sensors, but I'll look into it. Other than that, he says his temps are good. Now that you mention it, that might be what's happening.

I don't know what mobo he's using, but he's using an Athlon II X4 @ 2.8 GHz and the HD 6870. I've asked him to find out what PSU it is, but he's apparently too lazy to open up his PC :/

As I said, it's a new problem on an old system (the GFX card isn't new either) so I doubt a BIOS flash would help.

Well, I asked him about temps and turns out he was hitting temps in the 60's at idle... Asked him to open it and look and he said it was all clogged with crap. He decided to try to clean it and now he can't turn it on... He's apparently so mad at it that he doesn't want it fixed :/ Thanks for the help!
