Seeking some 1366 motherboard assistance.

Heya guys...I'm having some issues on some PC's in my office and after speaking with 6/7 techs at both EVGA and ASUS, I seem to have left everyone scratching their heads so, I figured I'd take it to you guys...See if anyone has had the same issues.

A little background: I'm an admin and we run a small "enthusiast" office that basically beta tests anything new for our company...New builds, new programs, new games...We recieve frequent review samples and we're a major vendor.

That being said, I'm having an issue with our 1366 platform and only our 1366 platform.

There are some parts I am not allowed to "speak" about, they'll have an (NDA) tag after them and I ask that, that's respected, please.

The interns have 12 computers (12 interns) and among them are 3 AMD machines (NDA), 9 Intel machines, 6 are on the 1366 platform, the other 3 are on the 1155 platform (NDA).

I happen to favor EVGA considering our former contracts with them, Jacob is an amazing guy...They're CS is beyond reproach on some matters but, we were recently given a couple samples, I decided it was time to broaden our spectrum.

3x EVGA Classified 770, 3x Asus Rampage 3 (2 black edition, 1 "normal")
12Gb Gskill Trident+ Turb 2
5x Intel I7 950, 1x 980x
Corsair Ax1200
Intel SSD's (NDA)
Cards range from: 6990s, 590s, 580s, quadro, 6970s and everything else under the rainbow for circumstance testing.

Now, all 6 machines, are experiencing the same exact issue...

All 6 of those machines, use the 590, exclusively and the issues started just around when the 590 was released...This is just an observation...I have tried different cards...It persists regardless...

The issue:

When booting, the motherboards will ONLY accept 8gb of ram...Bios refuses to acknowledge the 12gb.

When in windows, it accepts and sees 12gb ONLY the core is permanently underclocked due to the 8gb of ram.

It cannot be changed/altered in any utility and stays there.

All sticks test 5/5 perfect and all cores are LNIB.

I HAVE adjusted the freq/voltages as well on numerous occasions, went through the book with EVGA, nothing.

I have doubles of everything, so I've swapped out nearly every single piece of hardware to "double check"...

I've also tried and had them reconized individually in single slots per boot by setting the ram in: 1/3/5, 1/5/3, 3/1/5, 3/5/1, 5/1/3, 5/3/1...Didn't work.

In calling Asus about this issue...Let's just say I hung up the phone.

In calling EVGA about this issue...It was quite different, I was passed around to a couple techs, explained the situation that spanned cross platform and eventually was able to talk to a couple senior guys who, while being of great assistance, were not able to replicate the issue on their end so, I have RMA's incoming.

I've tried different sets of ram, different types from 1333 to 2000, nothing, different cores...same deal...Different PSU's...Different cards...Nothing changes...NO BENT PINS.

I require these PC's to be 5/5 for beta testing and they're not at the moment so, it's a pretty big deal.

Any advice is more than welcome but, keep in mind, I did search and I've been through every list of what to do, to get the last stick recognized.

I keep trying to think of troubleshooting tips and the only two things that come to mind, which I am sure you have gone through it with EVGA...

The BIOS Revision on these boards may it be the Asus or the EVGAs are they all the same?

The IMC would be my other thought since they are all i7s from the same family.

But with so many different variables I am so stumped...I really hope someone sheds light on this for you...Please if you ever get a resolution please post it here, I am very curious

i have a question you have five systems, all LGA1366, so why even bother tell us about Z68 and AM3+? i signed my NDAs too. lol

Anyways Your boards both have the extra power plug for the GPUs, the molex connectors id check those. i am using this G1 Assassin, it like the R3E has all that crap for the NIC and Audio eat up power. On the R3E BE they have their own seperate supply, but when i put in my GTX 570s in SLI i have to put those two extra plugs in for power. The GTX 590 is a ungodly cheat of a card. it wont fall into TDp and none of your ES product will either, even the intel CPus don't call within their TDp when they are ES. I bet its a power issue, just amek sure all 5 boards have their extra power things pluged in.

I also want to ask, did you unmount the CPu cooler to put int eh GTX 590s? I have had problems with boards not recognizing if there is weird pressure on the CPU. happened with my X58A-OC(NDA) lol.

Anyways I am sure they didn't tell you to increase your IOH core did they? its common sense when running SLI systems you gotta increase IOH core to at least 1.2v. the Classy should have this done at stock, but give it a bump to 1.3v it wont hurt.

I am guessing they told you to raise qpi/vtt and dram voltage. Also try some other slots, or even try 3 slots in a rise instead of skipping the first and every 2nd slot.

I'm stumped too, as well as EVGA.

When I called them, we did 3 hours of "sporatic" random testing and basically tested the **** out of the voltages...

Every set of ram was "different", obviously but, none would accept the overclocks, new voltages etc.

The irony is, the ORIGINAL boards we received, did recognize 12gb for the first boot THEN this problem surfaced...Not JUST on the Asus but, on the EVGA as well.

And yes, all are flashed to the new bios.

I anticipated ordering 990x's around the office for our "budget upgrades" but, when this problem came to light, I decided to stall.

We actually have about 20 systems but, 12 are used real-time...The rest are for benching...Was just relating how many PC's were having the issue as opposed to how many were not but, I see your point, I guess.

All of the boards have had the molex in since day 1...I was actually one of the people that had a burned out 24 pin in sampling so, I'm very familiar with that issue.

I have not loosened or re-seated the CPU's yet because the problem is universal...I figured it was a waste of time considering I swapped every CPU 3-4x but, I guess we could give it a try.

3 have Venom X's, 3 have EK HF blocks...

I've always raised the IoH core due to the above sampling issue, that was something I discussed with the "upper level" guys as well...From their perspective, it's definitely NOT a power issue...I mean, the system in it's entirety even with a killer OC maybe will come in around 700-750 watts and these are AX1200's...Tested each rail as well, all are 5/5.

I have not tried slots 2/4/6, actually...My understanding of 1366 was that, 1/3/5 were basically all that could be utilized because of the channels, no?

If not, I could give that a try.

Ty for your assistance guys!

Correct me if im wrong but i think its quite common this, usually experienced with large amounts of ram or populating all ram slots.

Usually you can raise your QPI/VTT and solve this issue.
If you look in my albums i have a picture af an Asus P6X58D-E,that board needed QPI/VTT raising to recognise all 3 sticks of ram in my current sig rig.

Worth a try,good luck.

you can run RAM in any slots man, they aren't there for show, i use the other RAm slots all the time for testing. The i7 1366 have actually 4 channels, 3 of them are usable and each hooks up to two slots.

Doesn't seem to be solving the issue, just tried everything

Out of curiosity, what did it take to get the MB to recognize all 3?

Still only recognizing 8gb, had an intern swap all slots, try QPI etc...Did it for 12 hours on the night shift, no go for the Asus, no go for the EVGA boards.

Strange that nobody you spoke to knew about this issue, because to me it is a known issue. If you look around the forum in the memory section there you can find dozens of posts about 'not all memory is being recognized'. The issue only persists on X58 boards.

Sometimes it helps when you enable/disable the memory remap feature. Or maybe some other memory settings you can try...

We did that actually...Had 2 interns print every possible post/solution and after doing them all, we have yet to find one.

I believe I stated that in the original post

At this point we're really looking for other options...It's more than likely I'll be switching the Intel boards to 1155 but, maybe a last ditch effort will save their "lives".

Hi,

Cant remember exactly how much i upped by,but it was QPI/VTT that i upped to resolve an issue i had that sounds exactly the same.
Some ram will require you to run crazy high QPI/VTT to run at its specified speeds anyway.
Ram in my sig has 1.7v For QPI/VTT set in its SPD profile but will run at less and theres no way id run it at 1.7v anyway, i would never go above 1.43-1.45v,just my opinion.

Apparently 1.35v is supposed to be intels recommendation(45nm) but i do run mine higher all the time(1.41)due to running tighter timmings and i dont think my CPU has the best memory controller TBH.

As somebody has stated here, this is a very common post on here regarding all ram not being recoginsed.
Other know fixes have been reseating the cpu/cooler as somtimes uneven pressure around the socket can also cause this, which i have also experienced myself but this was only when using the stock cooler.

Without doubt id be looking for other people running the same ram as yours and ask what qpi/vtt they find they have to use to run at the speeds your running your ram at.

So you tested ram modules individually in each single slot, what did you find?
All stick work? all slots work? (individually).

Also check HERE to see GSkill Admin advising on running QPI at 1.55 with a set of their 2000Mhz DDR3,and note their Admin stating"1.5V is no problem. It will not destroy your CPU. Seems like you have decent cooling, so it should not be a problem at all."

EDIT:

note on QPI/VTT... i notice you are using 980x,i dont know what the intel rec for 980x QPI/VTT is,maybe its diff than what i7 930 45nm is?
