ok so the title basicly says it all im building a mmorpg gaming rig for my little bros wife on the cheap.

My question is which is better. The Pentium D I have an asus board that I can overclock it on. But the athlon is on a OEM board with 0 overclocking potental. I know back then the AMD's were better but were they that much better?

From a pure gaming standpoint they are within a couple % points of each other, with the Pentium D winning by a very slight margin, in anything else such as encoding, etc. the X2 will win, and will also draw significantly less power. At this point even with a moderately powered GPU your bottleneck will definitely be the CPU so go with which ever you can overclock, and shoot for the highest overclock that you can as to limit yourself least.

ok thanks I couldnt remember the difference between the two I know they both blow but I wont have a huge gpu behind it like a gtx 275 would be pushing it. Shes only gaming on a 1280x1024 crt but she wants to play the new diablo III and oblivion when they drop so ill prolly go with the pentium d and OC the crap outa it. Plus ive got an upgrade path with the 775 socket if she decides to go core 2 quad later am2 dosnt have that
