ubuntu unity, the heck!

Die unity die.. There I said it.

Ok, Ubuntu is NOT a mac, but unity feels like it. Yes I know I can switch to classic, but I don't want to fight it, as for me to get my desktop cube back, fun stuff, etc... I have to enable this UNITY, that I DO NOT WANT. I'm tempted to switch back to 10.xx , and screw 11. But really, i'm p'oed at it, and have more gripes..

MAC = click a window, oooh purdy menu replaces top bar...

Ubuntu... USED TO have... file menu, etc... ON THE WINDOW (as I prefered hugely). Now it's JUST LIKE MAC... evil...I dispise mac, I appreciate others who like it, but I don't. Die... evil thing...

Can anyone help me get cube back, without unity f*ing me over like a four leaf clover?

- Le_Loup

P.S. Ever since switching from 10.xx to 11.04, i've noticed a HUGE slow down on the OS. like I just jumped from win95 to windows 10, that kind of slow down, due to unity. evil thing.

your pretty screwed if you wanna stick with gnome honestly gnome2 (the one you liked im guessing) is no longer in dev and stuff... i guess you could always install it manually though

should check out stuff like openbox and xfce or even give kde a whirl to see if you can find a different DE to fall in love with
Kinda meh now...

Suggestions on how to convert 11 to prev 10 rendition, without classic forced? I'd like to work with it, but 10.xx worked smooth on my laptop. (see my profile/toshiba laptop for specs). Just curious, as i'd like to further get this working... It's rather annoying, even firefox 4 lags... like horribly... and not wifi inet lag, When scrolling it lags. And I have installed my ati driver set, working clean...

I just recently started toying with ubuntu, so pardon my newbie question, but can't you just install 10.0 if it worked better? I didn't even know 11 was out already.

That's true, I could just install 10.## instead, like I did prior to this anyhoo, but i'm trying to embrace a future upgrade, but still stick with the best of it, and remove the cluttered crud that's in the way of making it work... (my opinion, but seriously trying to make it run fast like the previous edition... which the prior one wasn't as bloated, and so much faster...like my laptop was on steroids fast...)

I need to update my Ubuntu partition to 11.04 so I can see what all the fuss is about.
it IS still linux... you SHOULD be able to change out DE's modularly...

if gnome2 isnt in the repos, just install it manually... or get openbox or xfce or kde or something :/

fighting with unity is gonna be a losing fight... if you dont like it, dont use it

Try another distro?
on a personal note i installed it on my desktop; got frustrated with the crappy workflow. I restored my arch installation with xfce.

If you REALLY want to do this there are 2 easy methods.

1) Install 10.XX and lock the Gnome base packages (version 2.32) and then do a smart update in Synaptic with 11.XX repositories.

2) Install 11.XX, use Synaptic to remove the Gnome packages (the base packages) and then re-install them with 10.XX repositories. Lock them at 2.32 and then log-out and back in. You could also get a secondary desktop (XFCE or w/e) and use that while you switch rebooting after you remove the base packages to make sure they are gone.

That's about the easiest you'll get, otherwise it's going to be a freaking hastle. You will then need to use the software center, or maybe even Synaptic, from then on. apt-get WILL ignore locked packages from Synaptic unless you "pin" them:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap...pt-get.en.html

Locking in Synaptic is by far the easiest solution. You can still use Apt-get but will HAVE to read things and make sure it doesn't affect previously locked packages (unless you pin it).
