Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu all are preconfigured with different DEs. They cover the big 3 alternatives to Gnome and now to Unity. That's really the only difference. They may change around a few other things to better integrate their DE but they're all the same base.

But the buntus are in no way the best that Linux has to offer. It all depends on how you define best. Some people think that Gentoo or LFS are the only way to go with Linux and that anyone who can't bother to learn them shouldn't use a computer. Most of us are not that way. There's many more choices. And that's the point Linux is all about choice and freedom. You can go from the most in-depth levels like Gentoo, Arch, and Slackware to the least in-depth like the buntus or Mint.

It's all up to you. Hmm...I think Linux should make that an advertising campaign. "It's about you and your choice and not what some corporation thinks your choices should be."

Thanks! That helps quite a bit. The unfortunate thing about having all these choices is that it is extremely confusing for a new user. Trying to get what you want when you don't know what's out there, or even know what you want, is a daunting task.

Check out the sticky at the top of this section on "Linux for new users" and "Which distro is best for me", then look for a thread called something like "Show your Linux desktop". That's where you can see all the call stuff that you can do with the DEs.

Hope that helps.

If you want to see what each DE (not distro) will look like then search Google images for KDE, LXDE, XFCE. Heck even stop by their respective home pages. The break down really is that LXDE is the lightest weight and therefore the "fastest" while KDE is the best looking and XFCE is in between them.

Even that was laggier then 10.10, no joke... 10.10 was smooth as, *enter phrase that's just epic awesome to you*, and well yeah... 11.04, it's my perception, the service pack that never shoulda woulda coulda won't...

My opinion, but i'm now on 10.10 again, and doing oh so much better, apps reinstalled, all smooth again, all looking awesome.. themed and decked out. Basically I can show it off better then the unity theme, as the compiz addon's... are SO much better and sleeker/adjustable compared to unity, as unity & compiz fail to work together, rather break everything down to nothingness of doom. (ie horrid gfx glitches, etc).

You can adjust the size with compiz settings manager. It's about the only thing you can change.
